Question Excess skin

I am planning for the future... I know when the weight is finally off that there will be excess skin around the belly, arms, and inner thighs.

Does anyone know alternatives to surgery? Or has done something other than surgery that helped?

I am trying to research alternatives, so I can plan and save for the necessary treatments.

Thanks

If you don't get a lot of replies, try doing a forum search. I'm pretty sure I ran across some information about that on here, but I can't really recall what. One thing that DID strike me (and made me feel better) is that they were saying that slow and steady weight loss results in a lot less of that, since your skin has time to adapt. Since I'm losing at about 2 pounds a week, I guess that fits. and ON that note...may I ask you how rapid your weight loss is? I'm so impressed you already lost 40 pounds. I thought that starting out over 300 my weight would come off faster than the "safe one to two pounds a week" they say for "normal" size people. It USED to when I was younger, that's for sure! I've had a few moments where I felt pretty discouraged, but over all I can live with that.

Hey thinchix thanks for the reply

My weight loss has been anywhere from 0-3.5 pounds a week. usually I range from 1-2 pounds a week. Sometimes it is misleading for women cause of our monthly time I usually gain (before I started loosing weight) now I just maintain and find when it stops I have a bigger weight loss the next week from getting rid of the excess water that built up for the monthly visitor.

I am hoping that is true about rapid versus not. I am also hoping that weightlifting and doing stomach exercises will help with it.

I did do a search, problem is "excess skin" produces about 200 posts the ones i saw titled it. really were old(2008,2007) and didn't talk about alternatives to skin removal surgery.

Has anyone tried body wraps? A little too girly for me, but just wondering if it might tighten things up a bit...

Somewhere, maybe a year ago, I wrote up the tips from a Duke skin specialist. She was big on dry skin brushing(can find videos how to do that). I am travelling, only with a tablet. When return home, I'll try to find the document on the computer.

yes please!!

I had a huge saggy belly, which I had a tummy tuck for, but the rest of me - well I blame age, cos my inner thighs and the tops of my arms are saggy and wrinkly. I've tried exercise and nothing will shift them. I solve the problem now by simply keeping them covered!

I am having the same experience. I'm not at goal weight yet, but my weight loss has left saggy thighs and upper arms. Yuck. I blame age too (I'm 55) and my skin just isn't as elastic anymore. I feel like it's another consequence to letting my weight get where it was. But I do look a lot better with my clothes on now!

Yup - same boat here. crazy loose skin on belly, I did lose rapidly and had two children. I actually have a consult with a plastic surgeon next Monday regarding skin on belly (long story, but if insurance is going to cover it I need to do it in the next year or so - if not i can wait longer until I've lost a bit more weight) - but as of now i can more or less live with the excess skin on thighs and arms - and mostly keep them covered up - hoping to maybe see some improvement with time and exercise - but not expecting any miracles

Not sure if this helps, but hey if nothing else I can probably give you a good idea next week what the going rate for a tummy tuck is

Sometimes it is tough to find things when searching any forum.

Hope your traveling goes well!

That would be interesting to know Sarah. I watched a video about someone who had it and was recovering. I tell you what it leaves a hug scar and the incision goes from hip to hip...

Hey Sarah, one of my concerns is clothing. The other concern I have is those yeast infections I currently get because the skin is folded over... I sure like that to be gone. Then the arms finding clothing that fits.

Let me know what the price is

ojoj, researching I found people saying you can't sleep unless you are propped up because of pain. Sort like you need to sleep in a reclining chair. I also see the scar doesn't go away for some people. How was it with pain/limitation for you? Would you do it again?

In a heart beat, yes!!!!!

It hurts for about three weeks, but every day is a little better. The first couple of days are the worst, you cant stand straight and yes, I found I had to sleep with my knees up and an extra pillow, but it was ok and worth it. I believe in the US, you have drains put in and they fill up - we dont tend to do that in the UK, I dont know why, but you can have swelling afterwards??! Some folk also have to wear a corset while its healing, but my surgeon didnt agree with that, so all I had was steri strip. All in all, I was thrilled with it! There is a scar, which is still there, but its kinda low down and doesnt show - its kinda where theres a natural crease anyway. I think I have some pictures of my scar etc on the link at the bottom of my signature??!

Yeah, I've seen the scars on some websites - no question tough I would take a scar over this fanny pack of skin anyday. I also already have two c section scars (which is part of the problem - since a pretty significant chunk of chunk has little to no sensation), so overall for me this is a no-brainer on the scar.

Clothes - I'm assuming you mean now - with the excess skin. Mostly my really excess skin is on my stomach so I dont have major issues with shirts. I haven't had too much of a hard time with pants but have noticed that as I get slimmer I have to try things on and be kind of critical. The skin is really pretty much just skin (well sure there's some fat and stuff in there) so its kind of "collapsable" if that makes sense. Now though that I'm smaller and wearing more figure fitting clothes I have to look and see if the excess skin shows in the pants (like a front butt). Ahhh, good times. By the way Spanx are a godsend in this regard, but i only whip them out for special occasions or dress pants (which dont hold the skin in as well as jeans).

Here are my notes from last year with some updates.
But long or elbow length sleeves and knee length pants are still my friend! No miracles, but this expert had many suggestions that may help:

The following are notes taken at a meeting with a Medical Aesthetician at a renown Integrative Health Institute one year ago, at the recommendation of the hospital’s Low Carb Program.

Tips for dealing with Loose Skin from Weight Loss

Best to start a regime while losing weight but even at four months bouncing around near to goal weight is OK. Better now than waiting until a year later after you stop losing weight. All these techniques will improve the skin, which continues to shrink and tighten further for at least a year after weight loss. If still unhappy then, consider discussing surgery after weight stable for at least a year or two.

In giving my history, I shared how lifelong eczema and a decade of KP went away after starting Low Carb. She sees this all the time. Sugar causes inflammation, and sugar in the body is created by starches too, so eliminating them both reduces inflammation so much that many different skin conditions clear up completely.

First and Best suggestion for loose skin is Dry Brushing: Recommends a brush by Bass, Medium texture for bristles. Firm is too hard.
http://www.amazon.com/Vegetable-Bri...37277375&sr=1-7

On Amazon there is only one long handle style by Bass, but many other types by other manufacturers. You can also find Bass brushes at Whole Foods, etc. Pick any head or handle style you like. Brush before showering daily. A quick light flicking motion. If skin gets red, you are doing it too hard. Work toward the heart. Get sides of body as best you can and have someone do back if available. This is a wonderful way to stimulate a special circulation system for skin which will really help tighten the skin. A number of videos on the dry brushing technique can be found on YouTube.

Hot Yoga: Great for skin as it purges Toxins, and regular yoga is good too.

Dry Sauna: NOT a steam room which stimulates a different system, only dry sauna. Start with 5 minutes, add 2 minutes each time until up to 20 minutes and you are sweating. Don’t drink water while in sauna. It should be at 118 degrees, which is hard to maintain when people go in & out. [118 seems low in our YMCA sauna. Even at 140 I do not sweat, but I’m weird. Have to personalize this rec]

Water: Drink lots, but that is usually not a problem with Low Carbers.

Hydration/Moisturizers. She recommends Palmer’s Cocoa Butter products. They have a light cocoa smell which I like, but if you don’t, there is an unscented product, though an extra chemical may be needed to remove the scent. After shower, use the OIL on your skin..it is quickly absorbed and not greasy. http://www.amazon.com/Palmers-Thera...37278168&sr=1-8 [I LOVE this oil...$9.47 at Walmart, also at Target, Walgreen’s etc. Sometimes this brand is found in the ethnic and/or baby pregancy aisle] Then add over the oil, either the cream or lotion. Lotion is a lighter product. [The cream in a tub is too greasy for me, almost like vaseline] Don’t worry if the lotion bottle says for pregnancy stretch marks, it’s all the same cocoa butter. I use pure coconut oil too, which I like, but she thinks cocoa butter is better for hydration. This Palmer’s brand has a number of other additives with the cocoa butter, something to consider.

Exfoliating: I use baking soda very lightly for face and a sugar scrub from Trader Joe’s on body. Those were fine with her. Do some type of very light exfoliation in shower after dry brushing may help skin too.

Massage: A lovely extra benefit! Massage may improve your circulation and release toxin build-up, assist lymph drainage, and helps soreness from exercise.

We talked a bit about hair loss which can be caused by ANY change in diet. I have been reading about long term LC and thyroid issues, which may have had an impact on my thinning (or just age). [Since this meeting last year, adding more vegetable carbs and iodine has helped somewhat. Brows are much better, hair seems thicker too. I still remain under 50g carbs, but higher than I was last year. Good thyroid podcast with Chris Kresser. http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/...s-kresser/13707 ]

Just wanted to chime in and thank everyone for the great advice! After about 4 months I've lost 44 lbs, and I am definitely already having some issues. It's good to know there's something that can be done
