Ratings of Exercise

What determines if a person is non-active, kinda active, moderately active, active, athlete...
My doctor says I'm not active... yet, I climb three flights of stairs four times a day. I'm constantly getting up and walking across my work, which occupies a third of a mill building. The plotting room is in the opposite side of my cubical. I'm constantly getting up and down at home, watching two kids who are 11 and 14 can make you do that. I walk to the drug store which is two blocks away. I never take elevators, I prefer stairs. Even when I'm standing I'm bobbing up and down (I'm hyper, sorry). Yes I draft on a computer but I do get up alot. Even the bathrooms are on the other side of the office.
Starting this week I'm biking for a half an hour each morning for 5 days a week. Where does this put me?

Sounds to me like you're active. This is what I found for moderate physical activity:

Quote:
Moderate physical activity includes walking, gardening, and shooting some hoops. Adding any physical activity to your life can improve your health. Take a small step toward better health by making physical activity part of your daily routine. The chart below shows a range from moderate (the top 1/3) to vigorous. Think of it as an activity serving chart. Add 10 minutes of physical activity to your daily routine to take a step toward the recommended 30 minutes 5 days a week. See your doctor before increasing your activity if you are over 50 years of age, overweight, have a medical problem, or your family history includes heart disease or other chronic diseases.

From the Iowa Dept of Public Health

And this is from the Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Quote:
A moderate amount of physical activity'is equivalent to activity that burns roughly 150 calories per day or about 1,000 calor'ies per week. Activity durations will vary according to the intensity of the activity.

Examples include:*

Gardening for 30-45 minutes
Raking leaves for 30 minutes
Shoveling snow for 15 minutes
Walking 2 miles in 30 minutes (15 min/mile)
Wheeling self in wheelchair for 30-40 minutes
Pushing a stroller 1 1/2 miles in 30 minutes
Running 1 1/2 miles in 15 minutes (10 min/mile)
Stairwalking for 15 minutes
Playing touch football for 30-45 minutes
Basketball (shooting baskets) for 30 minutes
Basketball (playing a game) for 15-20 minutes
Wheelchair basketball for 20 minutes
Bicycling 5 miles in 30 minutes
Dancing fast (social) for 30 minutes
Swimming laps for 20 minutes
