Default Calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index)

One of the most important results we will achieve from Atkin's will be the lowering of our Body Mass Index (BMI). And, very few of us on this forum have it listed on our profiles (under our names with our stats).

Body mass index (BMI) is measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women.

Go to: www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

Enter your weight and height using American or Metric measures.
Click on compute and your BMI will appear in the heart of the figure.

BMI Categories:

Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Let's all go go to this site and get this information on our profiles.

Hi there!

I have no idea what the IDEAL is for me in such a range - so I have no "goal" BMI therefore I don't see the point *for me* to post it.

Thanks so much for the link though! It was nice to know my current BMI!

Actually BMI is usually a load of bull. It takes your height, age and then tells you what you should weight. It has no regard for how much lean weight you've built up. According to those BMI charts I could get down to around 108 pounds. Considering when I was doing BFL I had 110 pounds of lean weight, that would be impossible.

Instead it's usually a lot more accurate to get your body fat tested. Then you have an idea of what a good goal weight for yourself would be. Not what a bunch of doctors think the weight for a person of your age, height and sex should be.

Well, that didn't make me feel the least bit good. What it told me was that even at my GOAL weight of 165 lbs, I will still be "obese" according to BMI.

That's funny, because when I get to that weight, even if I add no lean body mass, I will be at 22% body fat which is within the healthy range. Even at 20% bodyfat (161 lbs), I would be "overweight" according to BMI, and only a tenth of a point away from "obese."

According to this site, 132 lbs should be the MOST I should ever weigh. I assure you that if I ever got down to this weight, I would be so emaciated and sickly that I would probably need hospitalization.

BMI is crap for muscular people.

Emily

Hi Emily! *Waves!*

Yeah...I know what mine is now - but I don't know what it SHOULD be anyway - just what weight I look/feel best as - ya know?

Ahhh! I had some tasty red wine Saturday! I may have to have the same kind tomorrow!

wow, and here i was all happy and stuff! all the measurements can be taken only for what they're worth. i weigh much more than i thought i wanted to, even though the bmi is "normal". all these stats put together are just to give us some sort of guide...but the bottom line is i am not longer "technically" obese! that's an accomplishment...even though i'm just barely normal! i rushed off to do the bmi for fun, knowing full well that it can be very inaccurate, but so can scales and actuarial tables! the main thing is to look for improvement, in my opinion!

Right on, Emily. I am very muscular too. When I go to the doctors and get weighed, the person weighing me always does a double-take because I weigh a LOT more than it looks like I weigh.

Kind of a weird measure. According to that I could weigh 115 to 154 and still have an OK BMI. I know I don't feel well at the upper end of that range and I do not remember the last time I weighed 115 -- could have been 5th or 6th grade.

I agree, the BMI is a load of crap. Of course, it's nice to no longer be considered "obese," but the scale is way too over-simplified.

Amongst the scientific community, BMI is considered woefully inadequate. It's no better than the silly height/weight charts of yesteryear. Even the somewhat inaccurate body fat calculations based on measuring tape are much better.

Like most things: with a grain of salt

The BMI index is way too simplified to mean much for most people. It does not take into account how much muscle a person has. Two different people could be the same height and weight but have totally different body types. One could be lean and muscular and the other could have a lot of pounds of excess fat.

Well, if I slightly exaggerate my height... I'm sure no one will mind me adding the quarter inch I'm sure I just left somewhere...!

25.7 BMI

I don't know if I can sustain my goal weight (25 BMI) of 132.
