hello -
I think it is the magnesium in whole grains which is good - not anything else (and maybe some thiamin too). But you can get magnesium and B1 from meat, from vegetables, fish, nuts & seeds etc so you don't really need wholegrains.
Refined grains don't have the Mg and the B1 and it is these things above all that prevent heart problems.
A lot of people are terribly allergic to grains (especially wheat and so crave bread), and the excessive fiber and phytates in them is crap - it stops absorption of minerals (zinc for example).
And that is apart from the fact they are carbs.
Sorry, what did you say was good about them??? Hmmmm.
