Ok, it is about how soft drinks actually are really bad. Even worse than french fries. But I want to highlight:

The authors also concluded that the sugar substitute aspartame does not cause weight gain in adults. Following fears the substance could cause diseases such as cancer, health officials agree that 40mg per kg of body weight is the acceptable daily intake of aspartame.

"If you go on the internet and look up aspartame, the layperson would be convinced that aspartame is going to make them fat, but it's not," said Dr. Stanhope. "The long and short of it is that no human studies on noncaloric sweeteners show weight gain."

I have seen dramatic differences in people who gave up soda; even diet soda. We may not know exactly what is going on, but this happens too repeatably for me to think diet sodas are the consequence-free answer.

maybe it is a tool.

Atkin specifically limits AS to 3 a day. And in one edition cites the story of a client not dropping weight..... bc/ consuming 50 serving a day via soda.

Eat too much fat, weigh piles on. yet fat is high percent of diet for those doing keto.

I've found diet soda neutral in any of the ways I've measured at home, blood glucose or urine ketones. No effect on weight loss or energy. When I sweeten actual food, that's a bit different, there things can get carried away. In high school my favourite snack was washing down poppy bagels with diet coke, I think maybe drinking diet pop with food might be like sweetening the food itself, so I don't do that.
