My husband had heart bypass surgery nearly 20 years ago and took statins until a few months ago. His doctors at the time told him his high cholesterol was likely inherited; many in his family died from heart attacks. He doesn't eat quite Atkins, but has no sugar or wheat at home, tho he eats a few "treats" away from home. I cook to suit my diet, so he mostly gets Dr. B's low carb/high fat meals.

He stopped taking his statin after reading about the dangers, especially to the brain. He's a teacher and doesn't even want to consider losing his mental powers.

His next doctor appointment is next week, so we'll see what's going on inside him. He is determined tho, to not go back to taking the statin, no matter what.

So I'll keep you posted.

Here's one person's experience: Why I ditched statins for good

A vascular surgeon.

The only major changes I’d made to my lifestyle since coming off statins were eliminating sugar (including alcohol and starchy foods such as bread) and eating more animal fat. Many experts now believe that sugar is emerging as a true villain in the heart-disease story; while after decades of demonisation, saturated fat has been acquitted of causing heart disease by a recent “meta” analysis of 70 studies by Cambridge Universit
