Default UC Berkeley research shows stem cells cause hardened arteries

Wondering about the implications of this...does it mean we'll no longer be told saturated fat leads to cholesterol leads to heart disease?

UC Berkeley research shows stem cells cause hardened arteries

San Francisco Business Times Updated: Wednesday, Jun 6, 2012 | 12:50pm PDT

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley found that a new type of stem cell is to blame for hardened arteries.

For decades, smooth muscle cells in the walls of blood vessels have been blamed for combining with cholesterol and fat to narrow and block arteries, leading to heart attacks and strokes.

But a newly discovered type of stem cell --a multipotent vascular stem cell --is the culprit and should be the focus in ongoing medical research.

Song Li, a Cal bioengineering professor and researcher at the Berkeley Stem Cell Center, said, "For the first time we are showing evidence that vascular diseases are actually a kind of stem cell disease."

Deepak Srivastava, who oversees cardiovascular stem cell research at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, praised the work of Li and partners Zhenyu Tang and Aijun Wang because it "challenges existing dogma."

I'm just amazed that somebody 'praised' something that 'challenges existing dogma'. That's not something we get too often around here.

Saturated Fats ---> Cholesterol ---> Vascular Stem Cell ---> Heart Disease.
