3 weeks ago started metformin, and subsequently diarrhea during almost all waking hours (sucks, btw). I hate taking pharmaceuticals, but broke down yesterday and took an antidiarrheal, which allowed me to go to the gym today, at least.

Monday 23-Apr-12--gym:
  1. ET warm up for 6:03
  2. pushups warm up---on knees, perpendicular, 6x
  3. pushups angled, arms regular---16x
  4. squats warm up---leg press 170# 6x
  5. squats---with 16# of dumbbells (2x8#) did 12 each with arms inside, outside knees, and at chest, then did 8 more without the dumbbells; grand total is 36 weighted + 8 for 44 total
  6. pullups warmup--6x at 80#
  7. pullups---14.5x at 160# (couldn't get bar all the way down on that last one)
  8. Plankish---achieved and held for 15 seconds and 16 seconds, respectively
  9. ET cool down for 3:15
  10. stretching
I'd better review what Sam suggested, I just remembered that I didn't have to do so many reps of some of those---well, of pullups and pushups, anyway.

Friday 4-May-12:

~90 minutes of walking today, broken up as follows:
  • 70 minutes of a walk, during which my pedometer registered 6672 steps (got a free one from walgreen's, new toy, wth, right?)
  • 15 minutes wandering around Costco while my neighbor and his kids did their shopping
  • 5 minutes walking around my grocery store doing that shopping
I should have taken the pedometer with me on the errands. I want to see if I can get up to 10,000 steps, and what that feels like. Or if I can get up to 15,412 which is the number I remember someone saying that Amish people averaged. Or just see how many I do and if it's something that's at all fun to track. hehe

I have fallen out of the gym habit. The only way to get back into the habit is to go. Dad is such an unreliable gym partner that, really, he's not a gym partner at all. Which is actually fine, because I prefer going by myself. But now I have inertia again. Well, it happens, and it's in the past, so the present and immediate future need to be about getting back there, regularly.

6-May-12

Another 75-min. walk in a full-on sunbeam! My pedometer kept falling off, so I took it off and ignored it. No clue as to steps. Mom has 2, and if she can find both, will give me one.

Going to gym tomorrow with Dad, at 3 pm. I'm also walking with Mom at 10 am. Will see how both of those in one day works. I haven't done sprints in forever, so considering doing those at the gym tomorrow afternoon. We'll see....

Tuesday 8-May-12

Gym: sprinting session

I did 4 30-second sprints, spaced with resting between 1.5 and 3.5 minutes, depending on how I felt.

I definitely prefer resting spontaneously, rather than a timed 3-minute rest.

This is PROBABLY much more psychological than physiological. I was impatient when I started, and wanted not to be at the gym, so cut short the rests at first. But I was pooped at the end, and so that last rest session was longer (procrastination started to set in but I JUST SAID NO --- plus I had limited time to shower and eat lunch and then get to class, so had to so no).

My gym is closing. In mid June.

I'm so so sad about this. It's been my place of hope and getting stronger and hanging with Dad doing something healthy for ourselves instead of getting treats or eating a meal.

I found so many possibilities there---I had to, because it's so bare bones. And I made things work for me, which was challenging.

And now it's closing, probably permanently but not officially permanently, or so the guy said.

I am really down about this.

Sunday 27-May-12

Walked for 135 minutes

OWIE

heels/ankles/achilles tendon area were SO sore

This is the longest I've ever walked in my VFFs, which I got last August.

It was fun, as part of it was pushing my nephew around in his stroller, which seemed to mesmerize him

Gym today, which felt not good. I did the following:
  1. warmed up on elliptical for a few minutes
  2. plank-ish for 10 seconds each, 4 times, except one was for 15 seconds
  3. 8 unweighted (so bodyweight) squats
  4. 12 knee angled pushups with arms at equal distances
  5. 4 15-second sprints interspersed with 45 seconds resting (inadequate!)
  6. 13 pullups at 140#
  7. cooled down on elliptical for a few minutes
  8. stretched
I felt really out of shape, and also unhappy. The gym is closing, it's official, they're going to try to sell the equipment.

I was down about that, and about feeling so out of shape, both of which affected my performance.

Also, I'm on Day #2 of my Fat Fast, and I don't think that helped me at the gym.

I'm going to bed now, about 90 minutes early. After I drink some salt water, I just don't feel well.

PS: I did figure out how to do my exercises without the gym:
  • Plank-ish---on my bedroom floor (cat-free zone, so after I vacuum, it has super low fuzz)
  • Pushups---same, and can stagger hands again once I get back in the swing of things
  • Squats---in door frame facing one of the sides of the frame, which will mimic the setup I have at the gym. I don't have any dumbbells, but I could pick some up at the PlayItAgainSports place
  • Pullups---my most inventive: get a sturdy rope which can take my weight, and loop it around a few of the railings that go along with the handrail up the stairs. Sit or lie down on the floor below, bracing feet against the wall, and pull myself up into a standing-ish position. That's my brilliant plan!
  • Sprints---the walking sprints just don't work, since I'm not comfortable with my balance, or with walking fast in my VFFs. But I remembered a long hill in local park that's covered in grass, so I could use a fast uphill walk as the sprint part, and then downhill+strollling to recover. Another possibility is to pull out my bicycle, get my ass used to riding it again (it's been 10ish years! ) and get on some bike paths and find some hills to do sprints on. I think I'll first try the hill at the park.

Friday 1-Jun-12

60ish minutes walking

Sunday 3-Jun-12

30ish minutes walking (explored some grassy hill possibilities for outdoor sprints; they were too short, but I've got a good lead as to another to try )

Bad today was that left leg kept wanting to bend backwards from the beginning of the walk. I attribute that to missing sleep between about 2-4:30 am each morning for the last 5 nights

Trying a new regimen tonight to see if I can sleep through the night.

Wednesday 6-Jun-12

4 sets of sprints on a nice long uphill, with resting at the top and then on the way back down

I forgot to take my watch, so don't know the length of the sprints. Whatever it was, at the top of the hill (it got steeper! not fair!!!!) I was a little shaky and very panty, so I worked, anyway.

The hill is nice and grassy, and was in a full-on sunbeam today!

I felt it in my butt especially, and lower back, much moreso than on the elliptical.

I enjoyed it, but it was challenging.

I'm not sore. Yet. Tomorrow may be a different story. If not, I might consider doing 5 instead of 4, and/or resting a shorter amount of time in between.

70 minutes walking

4 hill "sprints" (I was a slow turtle today, so the word sprint is relative)
