His point is interesting. Low fat diets aren't just low fat diets, they're also calorie restricted. Cutting calories from a low fat diet means you have to cut carbohydrates, because there just aren't enough fat calories to cut. Therefore, any improvement from a low fat diet you have to ask yourself whether it's because you removed a little fat or a lot of carbohydrates.

I lost weight on an ad libitum low-fat diet when I was 17-18 (almost 15 years ago), but I gave up because I craved fat all the time. Just saying.
