Default Report: Insulin Resistance May Lead to Cancer

Report: Insulin Resistance May Lead to Cancer

Cardiac rehab specialists who help people reduce a common complication that leads to diabetes and heart disease might also be helping in the fight against cancer.

When Reed Coen first started working out in cardiac rehab, he'd usually get in about three days a week.

“I was having a blood flow problem to the brain and my doctor thought this would be a good way to alleviate that problem,” he said.

More recently, however, he was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, a problem that often starts with insulin resistance.

Cardiac Wellness Nurse Scheri Miller said, “Insulin Resistance is when the cell is unable to take up insulin from the bloodstream, so it becomes resistant to pulling glucose out and into the muscle cells to be used.”

As the glucose (sugar) stays in the blood, it raises average blood sugar levels, the hemoglobin ALC. Normal ALCs are below about six percent.

“So now I come in five days a week, work even harder on it, and lost 29 pounds, and went from 7.3 on the ALC down to 5.9, so it can be done,” Coen said.

But, in addition to those benefits, he may also be getting a big dent in cancer risk as well.

A new report in Environmental Nutrition says some of the most common cancers have now been linked to insulin resistance, which is why it's important for all of us to bring this risk down.

Researchers found that an “insulin-like growth factor” can fuel cancer cells, especially the cells linked to colon, breast, endometrial, and pancreatic cancer.

You likely have insulin resistance if your blood sugar levels are above 100, even when you have not eaten for eight hours.

To lower your odds of developing diabetes, heart disease, and perhaps even these connected cancers health experts advise losing weight and exercising to promote the muscle to update the glucose and use insulin back,

To find out if you have insulin resistance, get an initial blood sugar test at your doctor’s office.
