I bet this study showed whole grains were "protective" for two reasons:

1) people making an effort to eat whole grains were likely to also exercise more and eat lots of veggies.

2) all study participants were eating grains, and whole grains are probably less damaging than highly refined grains.

What's that going to do???

Eating lots of carbs (main energy source of veggies) has never done me any good.

Restricting their intake via Atkins diet has done me a world of good!

[For the record I eat veggies every day, but try hard to restrict them)

People who eat whole grains tend to eat fruits, vegetables, and I'd bet more unprocessed meats. Just guessing.
Whoa--aren't you worried two and a half servings is going to make you a little hippy?

We have really gotten into lacto-fermentation recently. if we ate grains we would soak them properly or sprout the lectin.

Whole grains contain PHYTATES which impair nutrient absorption.

The only randomized clinical trial to examine the effect of whole grains on cardiovascular mortality found a SLIGHT INCREASE

This is all in Anthony Colpo's book "The Great Cholesterol Con"

hello -

I think it is the magnesium in whole grains which is good - not anything else (and maybe some thiamin too). But you can get magnesium and B1 from meat, from vegetables, fish, nuts & seeds etc so you don't really need wholegrains.

Refined grains don't have the Mg and the B1 and it is these things above all that prevent heart problems.

A lot of people are terribly allergic to grains (especially wheat and so crave bread), and the excessive fiber and phytates in them is crap - it stops absorption of minerals (zinc for example).

And that is apart from the fact they are carbs.

Sorry, what did you say was good about them??? Hmmmm.
