One of the reasons for my endless weight gain? My dh is the cook, and I'm an enthusiastic eater. It just seemed ungrateful and unloving to turn down all that wonderful food. And boy could he dish up a plateful!

It was SO HARD to insist on low-cal/low-carb cuisine. Low-CARB is a lot easier for both of us to live with. He still doesn't quite understand my tenacity when it comes to weight management disciplines, but he cooperates lovingly.

SOmething funny-- DH read DANDR without my urging before we got married. He'd been literally falling asleep at his desk at work. He switched from regular sodas to diet, regular juice to low- sugar/reduced calorie juices, and said that he feels so much better. He also got a clear understading of why I low carb-- he's a scientist and needed facts.

The first 10 chapters of DANDR, IMO, could convince anyone to try it!

If only my dh would be so inclined. He's a total sugar-holic, and frankly, I'm amazed at how well he does on the diet he prefers. He was a shrimpy kid growing up, but got tall and skinny. Now he's tall and skinny--except for the middle part. He insists he weighs the same as ever--but the location and quality of that weight is real different. Oh well. Gotta love 'em.

I've spent hours this weekend re-reading my atkins, but i'm disappointed that my 1992 edition has gone to spain with my evil outlaw (even more so cos i know she doesn't use it!), so got a new copy which is 2002. I was glad enough to have that though and it has helped me mentally set up for tomorrow when i begin my pure induction, i cannot believe i've never gone up the OWL ladder but i'm determined i'm following the rules to the letter

At a pal's suggestion, I also purchased the 1992 version. It is the first version with the 4 phases. Dr. Atkins wrote this one in response to lots of heat and-- well, so far this text is the best one yet, IMO. Got it for 4 bucks, shipping included, off of Amazon.

I love that I am still learning so much...even after 4 years as a low- carber!

I frequently read Dandr 2002 edition. It sits here on my desk for reference. I also picked up Atkins for Life at the Dollar Store. Since it was only $1 it was worth it for the recipes and for added inspiration.

So I guess picking up a copy of the 1972 edition is the cool thing to do? I better start scouring Ebay, then. I have the 1992 version, as well as the latest edition. I could use a refresher course.

Just be prepared for the fact that '72 is a much more austere program than either '92 or '02, at least at first. It eventually catches up to the others. I love '72 mostly for the tone of it...it's classic Dr A, with his "in-your-face" attitude to the "establishment."

My 1972 paperback also has a transcription of Atkins's testimony to a congressional committee in defence of his dietary recommendations. Powerful!

I've been reading my 1972 edition of Dr. Atkins book and I'm surprised, actually, at how different it is. From the tone of how it's written to the induction phase, it is very different than the other versions I've read (1992 and 2002). I like the tone of his writing (very 'in your face' as Elle mentions) but I am not sure I agree/like the induction phase of the '72 edition. For example, cream cheese isn't allowed. When I was in the induction phase of my weight loss I lived on mock danishes (still love them, actually). And the veggies are very limited in the '72 edition induction phase, much more so than in the other editions.

I wonder why it changed so much over the years? Additional research? What do you all think it was?
