Default Kidney Stones

Doctor was supposed to use a laser to blast the stone. Unfortunately passage was kinked and he could not get to the stone. So he left a plastic shunt in the passage. I find out tomorrow what happens next.

Default running

Wbahn, and the others of you who said you used to keep your weight off by running and when you quit you gained at a phenomenal rate. I'm wondering did you ever read "Protein Power?"

In the chapter he has on excercise he describes that EXACT situation and even has photos of a guy who did just that. Four photos in fact. In the first one he is thin as a rail and running a LOT, in the second one he is WAY fat and it was taken only about a year or two after he stopped running. In the third he had started weight lifting and is very built, had lost all the fat, had been doing low carb and weight training and looked extremely good only 6 months later. In the fourth he was no longer working out on a regular basis, but had maintained his weight and his muscle mass.

Dr Eades explained it that runners tend to metabolize their muscles, inadequate protein and all that running makes them lose muscle mass which makes it really easy to gain weight. They manage to keep their bodies active and their metabolisms reved because of all the movement, but as soon as they slow down they gain at a phenomenal rate.

I urge you both to read what he has written and also to start some weight training. Building muscle is the best way to keep the calories burning themselves up even when you aren't working out.

About 10 to 12 years ago, I was lifting and lost about 50 pounds from doing that only. Not dieting. I'm older now and have to do both, but I am HOPING to break through this stall I've been at for about two years. I know I have more muscle mass now. It should start kicking in and working for me any time now.... I hope I hope.

Hmmm, that's interesting, Sherry, I had not read that before, but it makes sense. I too was a runner, and everytime I took some time off, the rapid weight gain was amazing. Of course part of that is that when you are distance training, you can pretty much eat what you want- most of us keep up that pig-out menu when we stop running!

I am trying to incorporate some mild weight training in my exercise this time around. I have arthritis and pretty severe tendonitis in my ankles and knees, so there are a lot of things I can't do, but I am doing a mild upper body work out with free weights every other day, to supplement what I do on the cardio-glide. I use my bed (with the TV on- what luxury!) instead of a floor mat.

I know you can't spot reduce, but I am trying anyway to work on those darn "bat wings"- flap-flap-flap- gonna fly away soon! I do those head crunches, plus the usual stuff that can be done from the supine position- any other suggestions?
Hugs,
Kat

Default For triceps

which you probably know are the backs of your arms. Take a dumbbell, hold it in both hands from one side of the dumbbell. From a standing position lift it straight above your head with your arms extended, bend the elbows and lower it to behind your head. Keep your elbows pointed upward and close to your ears (don't let them flare outward away from your head).

Do about 12 of those, increase the weight and do 10 increase the weight again and do 8, increase the weight and do 6, then decrease the weight and do 12. You'll feel it. That pattern by the way is the Body for Life pattern 12,10,8,6,12,12 (the last 12 you work the same body part but do a different excercise). There are one minute rests between each set except the last 2. No rest between them.

http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html Here is a great website to show you how to do various excercises for different body parts. It has little animated pictures of people doing them so that you can get the form right. I think they do some of them a little fast, but it still helps show you how they are done.

You are right about eating a lot as a runner, I think he did say that too, that he could eat tremendous amounts of food because of the running, because his metabolism was high, but when he stopped running it didn't work so well.

The photos though were what was amazing to me. You really need to find that book and look at those four photos. His explanation too was more complete than what I've said here.

Hi Amarise

I started out with 200 punds to loose. I now have about 100 to loose. I didn't weigh this week so I am not sure.

You can do this...

I agree, this is a great thread.

Hopefully tomorrow the grain elevator will let me use their scale and I will have some clue of what I weigh. In any case I definitely have around 220-250lbs to lose. I am beginning weights and water and planning now, and the LC next week (when I get the funds for first shopping), but in reality these are just a big part of an overall attempt to better organize my life, improve my attitude, and create a better reality for myself.

Talking

Hi everyone I'm a newbie to the board. I have been on diets for the last 4 1/2 years, consistently gaining. I found out I have pcos, IR, and hypothyroidism not too long ago. Me and dh are ttc#1 and are not having success yet after 10 months. So to help my situation I am taking herbs to bring aunt flo back and doing low carbing. So far so good, Glucophage and levoxyl are helping me to be able to pull the weight off that I couldnt before. I have a long ways to go still but I'll get there

Having fertility problems is amazing motivation for losing weight

Hi,
Just checking in. I am back on LC this week after being off last week from an infection. Got back to Gym this week doing both Cardio and Resistance training. I kind of sore all over but it's to be expected the first few week of Resistance training. I have a minor elective in-office Medical procedure I having done tomorrow. It's probably going to keep me from the gym for a few days. I am going to try and stay on LC.

The first 50 pounds came off very fast, well two months if you call that fast. Now I am adjusting to the fact that the remaining weight is going to be a long slow uphill fight where consistency is going to be the deciding factor. I think I've gotten over the obsession with the scale and ketosticks. I know how to eat LC now, I control what goes in my mouth, as long as I exercise that control I will lose fat. It easy to get depressed when you see the fast initial loss, and then have things slow down.

I've come to recognise again, that I am human. Sickness, circumstances, and other junk will at times be at conflict with my long term LC lifestyle. I will at times not be 100% LC compliant, but the key is to not feel guitly about it, and to get back on LC as soon as it is possible.

One thing I do know is that I don't ever want to be the person I was two months ago. That person was always tired, couldn't walk more than a couple blocks without pain, would wake up with back pain every morning, that person was not in control of where they were going.

Finally, we are not an Island, we need help from our family and our friends. This is why this forum is such an awesome place. Many of us are in the same boat, have the same challenges, face the same issues. We need eachother, to be encouraged when we are down, to grow, to motivate. All I can say is here I am, if there anything I can do, let me know

Autumn,
Welcome to our little group. Good to hear you are seeing results.

PJ,
I don't know your financial situation but Siltec makes a scale that goes up to 500lbs. Without a display stand (display sits on floor, I use my big toe to turn it on/off) it runs about $180 with a display stand it runs about $200. Let me know if you want more information or a link to a distributor.

Regards,
Lux

Smile hi guys!

i am so glad to see you all again posting on this.

Lux, P.J., everyone -(my people!!)

i so understand how you feel. My all time highest was 348 and a HALF and back on april 9th 2000 i went LC cold turkey without one single slip up and was down to 198 by aug 3oth and went out to dinner for a friends birthday and "accidentally" ( ) got one tiny teaspoon of mashed potato on my steak and within 15 minutes i was in the bathroom (thank God it was a private one) of this fancy french restaraunt and i was soooo sick i thought i was gonna die. well, that liitle slip up led to more slip ups and by the summer of 2001 i was back up to 270 and by this past june tipped the scales at a whopping 342 at the doctors office and knew that if i did not get serious and get back on the wagon i was gonna hit 400 someday and at 5'4" tall that would just about do me in. when my Doc said either stick to low carb (at least he is PRO atkins) or consider intestinal bypass surgery - i drove home in tears praying to God and i distinctly heard the "still small voice" of God whisper to my heart..".why not find an internet support group?..try looking up LOWCARBER.ORG" ...and as soon as i walked in the door i logged on to this sight and i am sooooo thankfull i did!!

i wish i could say i have made it through with no slip ups but at least i have this place and you good people to take note of my absence in my journal and e-mail me and remind me i am not alone and that REALLY REALLY makes it hard to stay down when there are so many arms reaching to pull me back up when i loose my grip on the old wagon .

so three LOW CARB cheers for all of you and know that you've got a friend who may not know your "real "name, but sure understands and cares a whole bunch.

now guys you may want to look away while i talk girl stuff w/ autumn!

autumn-
hi! WELCOME!!
i too was dx with severe PCOS last year....it only took them 10 years to figure it out!!! (and i am also a soulcyster with the same handle at soulcyster.com) and although my endo and gyno and reg doc all would like for me to take the metformin, i just was too afraid of the huge risk of fatal lactic acidosis and for me, by just LCing, my cycle has improved from 1-4 per year -sometimes lasting 6 -10 weeks and not returning for over 8 months- to every 35-45 das and only lasting 10-14 days, and my gyno said that my last ultrasound showed almost completely normal ovaries with just a few follicles each, whereas before i had HUGE cysts on both of them and was very worried i would never concieve. i am not on any bcp b/c i am single and dont need 'em and also b/c of the increased risk of stroke. MY endo told me that absolutely positively pcos is CAUSED by highcarb and IR and that eating LC is really the ONLY real treament that is proven. sorry for the long book here....just wanted to let you know there are lots of us fellow PCOS girls out here. blessings and baby dust to you!!

(BTW- i was born i MIch and all my relatives still live there...i spent my early childhood in ferndale and all my summers up north on grand lake and lake huron in presque isle. my parents grew up in oakland, highland park, bloomfield hills and grosse pointe. ever heard of vic canever chevrolet? i miss michigan...it is sooo much better on the great lakes than it is on the ocean!! so nice to meet a fellow michigander!! )

ok- guys- you can look now!!

to everyone! WE CAN DO THIS!!!

blessings

Default Thanks for the warm welcome :)

Amarise- Sorry for taking so long to respond, it was sil's wedding this weekend. That is wonderful low carbing is bringing back af on a regular basis. Mine has come back to normal too. I take vitex also to get rid of pms symptoms.I feel the same way about bcp's, I wont go back on them either. Its dh's responsibility after we get done having rugrats

Yep, I am definitely familiar with vic canever chevrolet, I live in Owosso, a suburb right outside of flint. I love the great lakes too! Me and dh take our camper up north all the time to parks. We love to go biking through trails. My favorite is traverse city. I have a little casino bug inside me that acts up once in a while
I try not to encourage it but sometimes it gets the best of me

Talking hi autumn!

i was gonna stop by your journal to say hello... but i see that you dont have one yet!! you've gotta get a JOURNAL so we can keep tabs on ya!
how cool that you know vic canever chevrolet...thats my grandfather!!! are the billboards still on us 23? my uncle runs it now since grandpa passed on in 1997.
i love traverse city too ...and macinac island is wonderful also.
everyone out here in ct and ny thinks the great lakes are little ponds...it is so frustrating trying to describe their beauty and size to people whove never seen them. i miss lake huron!!

anyway...about the metformin....has it helped you? do you worry about side effects? are you on the extended release? i wonder if it helps with cravings, but i'm still too nervouse to take it.

let me know..and get that journal started...it really does help!

to you and michigan!

hello all, new here. A friend at work who I got to lc. told me about this cite for lcers. I have been lcing for little over a yr now and really never thought of the net to find support. My son is always on this thing and well like I said never thought of this type of support..... well it is sooooo great to hear how others are doing and problems along the way and what theyre doing now. I have lost 100lbs now. I would love to loose another 60 to 70 more. It is getting real slow. I have never exercised so to speak and now realize I must. I like some of the suggestions I have read here. It is just getting started. I have gone from a 30 size to an 18 now and have alot of extra skin that I have no idea how to get rid of. ...... well I have decided to start at a gym this weekend. Wish me luck and will keep you all posted. This is so cool. Hope to here from all of you. ally here
