Thumbs down BEWARE IHOP omelettes!

DH and I went to IHOP last night. I wanted an omelette. I read the description of how they make their omelettes so "fluffy". They add PANCAKE batter to them! When I asked the waitress if I could have an omelette without the pancake batter she did not have a CLUE what I was talking about. To her credit, she went and asked the cook. She later brought me the BEST bacon and cheese omelette I have ever had. And there was a difference in the fluffiness. I didn't care.

GOOD HEAVENS!!!!!! PANCAKE BATTER?????

Thank you for the warning. Although I'm in Canada, we live close to the border and travel there a lot. I would have figured that would be a safe bet to order.

THANKS!!!!

I duplicated the effect at home by seperating the eggs, wisking the whites till stiff and folding those in the omelet-- the pancake batter step is the lazy way to do it. Maybe one could add baking powder?

I've known about this for awhile now. If you ask they have no problem making the omelets without the batter. If the waitress acts clueless just tell talk to the cook about it and they'll know what to do.

Agreed. Also, if they start fixin to give you some guff, tell them you are diabetic andf no flour, batter or sugar of any kind. They wil snap to, with nary a whimper. Most places are flat out afraid to do anything that will upset or cause ill to a diabetic or a person with heart or cholesterol issues..but tell em low carb and they look at you like a dog looks at an answering machine.....

Also, it is not just IHOP...I always ask at Perkins, Denny's and the lot....always tell them Diabetic and I have the most awesome omlettes and the waitress goes out of her way to make sure your meal was good. I have met a few cooks/chefs this way too!

Dishonest? Maybe a little, but it goes to show they will do special requests if you ask them and your reasons are "good enough".....

I'm so glad I read this thread. I had no idea. We've virtually stopped going out since I began, and I was thinking IHOP and a nice omelette would be something I could add back in to the routine. And I AM diabetic, won't need the little white fib!

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm technically pre- diabetic, so I guess I am pre - fibbing?

I always ask about the ingredients wherever I go, I developed this habit before low carb as I have a strong food intolerance to garlic and spices. They really make me ill, and it lasts about 3 days. Now I just include wheat/sugars in my questions. They will nearly always bend over backwards to help you. I always ask for sauces and dressings on the side, anyway, so I can add the amount I like and not have ameal swamped in slushy stuff.
Reading the menu closely is always a good idea too, as in this case. Pancake batter indeed! What a cheat.

Tell them you have blood sugar issues and can't have anything with starch or sugar, or that your doctor (the doctor who wrote the diet you follow) told you to eat this way. Then it's not a lie....
