I salute you people for doing Smoothies.
I even bought a Vitamix to do em in myself
but I got GREEDY and started adding too many
things into the smoothie and blew my weightloss
in about 2 years. I like honey too, but I was
putting in like a CUP of honey on towards the
end and it got ugly.

I still do smoothies and love em, but just
skim milk with whey protein powder and spices
for flavor.

Mint Leaves are good too.

Vanilla flavoring is good with All Spice or
Nutmeg or Ginger powder in it. Cinnamon is
good too. I just rely on the sugars from the
skim milk to get a sugar buzz, but there are
only 12 grams of sugar in a cup of skim milk.

I loved strawberries and bananas and pineapple
in my smoothies too. Then for a while I was
doing really crazy ones like putting KALE and
Carrots and Pineapple and Strawberries in the
same smoothie. Or spinach.

"Jeeze, what was I thinking!"

I hear ya, Ned! I too have put WAY too many carbs into my life with these concoctions! Can totally relate. A CUP of honey, though... never went THAT far!

OK, in your honor... try this one on for size:

Ned's "Reduced" Banana Split Smoothie

6 ice cubes
4 raw egg yolks
1/4 cup coconut cream
2 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp cod liver oil
2 tbsp cinnamon
1 very small banana (or carrot)
1/2 cup strawberries

blend well and enjoy!

Seriously... would love to hear your suggestions on making LC smoothies, as I know the ones I put in this thread are like WAY too high!

I just like to have a way to get in raw egg yolks, coconut oil, cod liver oil, cinnamon, carrots?, and anything else that is good for my health... in the form of a "treat".

Well, Wyv put an interesting recipe on here a while back.

I added the veggies for consistency mainly, and because it was recommended in the BARF diet book. Now that I'm no longer grinding their food - we usually just throw them a whole rib or chicken leg - they still get veggies in the form of "dog pickle" which I mainly use to preserve meat scraps I'm saving for them that would otherwise spoil. They loooove the pickle. No matter what kind of meat I put with it, they go for the pickle first. This vegetable matter is so highly fermented that it is mostly gone to mush, and they get it about once a week. Their obvious preference for it reinforces my theory that carnivores may benefit from eating the gut contents of their prey - which I believe the dog pickle resembles.

I also find that meat tastes more "complete" with a bit of kimchi or kraut. And the funny thing is, I had never liked these foods until after I had been low-carbing for awhile.

Well, to be fair... I think it is OK for dogs to eat veggies... since, after all, they are omnivores. But, I, being a carnivore, will have to leave the veggies out of this wonderful raw chicken smoothie!

And I was just getting ready to try it with some carob powder!

LOL, you may want to add some water at least, so the blender doesn't choke on it.

Me, I'll take my chicken rubbed with garlic and broiled.

Why is juicing considered to be so "healthy"? Wouldn't eating the whole veggies or fruits be better? Wouldn't juicing make the sugars break down & digest faster?

I once made my 5-year-old brother a chicken-pot-pie+chocolate smoothie since he wouldn't eat his dinner when I was babysitting. It looked & smelled like vomit, so I gave in and made him something else instead!

This information assumes you ARE using a vitamix.

Many vegetables work well. In moderation many
veggies like Spinach would be a good additive for
its vitamin and anti-cancer type ingredients.

Carrots also are good for the Vitamin A and other
Carotenes. Fresh Pineapple has nutrients that protect
the heart, AND Nuts alone can be ground into a paste
in a base of milk or water that makes for a delicious
milk shake. Almonds are the most popular I think.
You could add an egg or two to an almond shake
along with flavoring of your choice.

As I indicated in an earlier post, I have found that
the following spices are good additives:

Vanilla
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
All Spice
Ginger Powder
Mint Leaves
Anise Seeds (tastes like licorice)

and in moderation (like 1 per smoothie)

a banana
an orange
a couple of apricots
and strawberries of course,
as well as pineapple.

I no longer use the Vitamix but just a $20 Oester Blender.

I am on a limited budget (spend most of my money on
supplements, Dish Network, DSL and computer software,
Overeaters Anonymous, my Buddhist church or my
political associations) so I tend to take the line
of least resistance and buy whey protein powder
(which is loaded with ALL the essential amino acids)
at the cheapest rate I can find, use alot of
supplements including fish oil and supplement
my diet with pre-cooked ham and turkey meat
with an occasional steak with asparagus, brocolli
or mushrooms. I will do hamburgers OUT
once in a while and Subway or Quiznos, but I
always have them give it to me sans bun.

They way I look at it, adding Whey protein into a
smoothie is just about like adding raw meat to it.
Given all the protein, and NO CARBS, (and to my
personal taste, NO FAT) it is an ideal low carb,
lower calorie way to get all the energy I need
without worrying about putting on any
weight with the extra fat. I DO take a
supplement of 1 gram of fish oil - 3 times
per day however to get the vital omega 3s
and 6s I need to survive.

My doctor gave me complete approval of my
diet when I reviewed it with him last month,
particularly after he saw what he called the
'profound' transformation in my fat and
fitness level on the diet that I had designed.
He was vowing to go out and get some protein
powder too so as to lose the 45 extra lbs he
was carrying around.

I've wondered about that, too. It seems that in juicing you would injest a far greater amount of the vegetables/fruit than you could by eating them. When you eat them whole you must eat the pulp which fills you up and no doubt slows the sugar breakdown. In hunter-gatherer times there would be no way to consume that amount of carbohydrate so quickly.

The reason raw vegans use juicing, is they say in order to get all the nutrients in the plants they must juice them. This helps start the digestion process. Of course, I think that is truly ridiculous, as I don't really see the need for these things anyway. Eat predominantly animal food, as our paleo ancestors truly did, and you will be very healthy indeed. JMHO.

This is one surprising thread for paleo....milk, etc...maybe I've forgotten was paleo is since I haven't been on in awhile.

My weight got up to high again following chemo and I want to add some concentrated phytonutrients so I'm forgetting the smoothies for now (was blending plain kefir, berries and the occassional frozen banana) Instead I'm concentrating on juicing kale, celery, cabbage, etc...lc veggies as eating the rainbow along w/good sources of protein is important as my cells rebuild. Anyone here juicing veggies? I add the broth to chicken broth spiked w/turmeric, garlic and herbs. Good antioxidants that make the body less cancer friendly and the soup smells and tastes wonderful. Celery or cucumbers are a nice base for adding stronger flavored veggies to. Anyone here grow their own celery? I'm thinking of trying it out as conventionally grown is high on the list of veggies that absorb too many pesticides and organic is very expensive.

Favorites:
cucumber/celery/cabbage

kale or spring greens/ditto

Just about anything is good here to add in...the tougher asparagus ends for ex., some lemon

will be adding in a little carrot or beet when I'm past induction phase

favorite fruits combos juiced (when my weight is in a better place): apple/cranberry apple/ginger apple/carrot/cabbage
