Default My Canadian grocery shopping list

I'm going to be briefly in Montreal and Quebec this summer, and I am planning my grocery shopping list. (I always try to go grocery shopping when I am visiting different places to I can get the things I can't get here!)

So, from reading your book, Karen, I think I definately want to stock up on the Canadian Sugar Twin and brown sugar twin, since I can't get that in the states. And I'm thinking I also want to get liquid Splenda as well, since apparently we can't ge that in the states either. (I'm imagining these things are just sitting out on the shelves of normal grocery stores for the convenience of lucky Canadians) Can you, or anyone else, think of any other things I should put on my shopping list? Hopefully I won't get stopped at the boarder for trying to smuggle in contraband sweetener! Thanks!

Hi dd,

Can't say that I've seen liquid Splenda here, but you can get liquid Sugar Twin. You're right in deducing that it's in the baking aisles of grocery stores.

Now that's really interesting- I wonder who IS able to buy liquid splenda? We had a discussion about it in the bowl muffins thread

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...424#post5284424

that it is illegal to sell it in the US, and I just assumed it could be sold in Cannda. I so often hear "liquid splenda" mentioned in people's recipe posts, that I assumed it was somehow easily obtainable to most people other that in the states. I've read about various liquid sweeteners that are apparently made with liquid splenda, but I assumed there was an actual Liquid Splenda, made by the Splenda people, available for purchase.

I am pretty sure I have seen liquid Splenda here in Nova Scotia, at the Atlantic Superstore.

hey....I had the same idea...I'm going to be in Calgary/Banff National Park in about two weeks, and was going to stock up on liquid splenda and brown sugar twin because I've been told they are available in Canada...that's a bit discouraging that they might not be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People buy it over the internet

Low-Carbing.com (Canada)

locarber,com (USA)

So, the "O carb liquid sweetener" is the same thing as liquid splenda and when liquid splenda is referred to in a recipe, you use that sweetener in the same way? I know it says it is "made with liquid splenda" but I wasn't sure if that means it's essentially identical to liquid splenda or is someway altered to make it its own unique product.

Yep! Those people have the liquid Splenda market.

One drop of the real liquid Splenda would kill 'ya! It's that powerfully sweet.

Is the sweetzfree that i've heard some people talk about the same as the stuff from Locarber.com? I have a couple recipes from people who use the sweetzfree stuff, though i ordered a bottle of the locarber.com stuff (no sweetzfree available now i guess). I've never used the liquid splenda before. I use Stevia in my hot tea, coffee or iced tea, but i find in larger quantities for cooking, it has a wierd taste.

Thanks.

It's all made with liquid Splenda, but some may be more concentrated then others. I think the Sweetzfree is 1/4 tsp. = 1 cup sugar.

As I recall, the Sweetzfree company wasn't around for a while. Now it's back.

Wow- that's sweet! The 0 carb Liquid sweetener says an 8 oz. bottle equals 32 cups sugar. (And costs 18.99US) They say their bottle will dispense 1/4 t. at a time. .25oz would equal 1 cup, but I don't know how many teaspoons that would be. I'm assuming the SF Davinci syrup is much more diltued than that.

I use Sweetzfree and love it.

To add to the original thread, though, one thing you can get in Canada but can't get in the US anymore is Ziploc vegetable bags, the ones with the little holes in them. I had four boxes in my suitcase when I came back the last time!
