EEEERRRR, I don't think 8 CUPS OF FLOUR is exactly low carb! I don't care how much flax is in it...

Default Nature's Own

I've bought the Nature's Own Wheat bread that has 5 Effective Carbs and keep it in the freezer to use when I really need it. It freezes well.

I think it is comparable to regular whole wheat bread.

It's about $2.20 at Wal-Mart, Albertson's, and Winn Dixie.

Sorry about the Flax Roll recipe, I was surfing very late! But I just tried Healthy Life White Bread, found it at Super Target but I also saw it at Wal-Mart. It was $2.09,
Total Carbs/Slice 8g
-Fiber - 2g
Net 6g

Just made 1/2 PB & SugarFree Smucker's Strawberry Jam sandwich. Yummy!
It tastes really close to the Wonder Bread I remember.

Cool A commercial bread that's low-carb!!

Just thought I'd run this past you all to see what you think...

Tonight I spent a good half hour going through each and every loaf of bread at the local Shaws supermarket. I managed to find one brand that is surprizingly low in carbs:

Country Kitchen Light, Oatmeal Bread

Here's the nutritional info:

Serving 1 slice

Calories 35
Total Fat 0g
Cholesterol 0g
Sodium 100mg
Total Carb 8g {Fiber 2g, Sugar 1/2g}
Protein 2g

Vitamen A 0%
Vitamen C 0%
Calcium 2%
Iron 4%
Thiamine 4%
Niacin 4%
Riboflavin 2%
Folate 4%

Ingredients: Wheat flour (enriched with barley malt, niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, soy fiber, oat bran, rolled oats, high fractose corn syrup, wheat gluten, yeast. Contain 2% or less of each of the following: wheat bran, salt, guar gum, soy flour, turmeric, corn starch, dough conditioners (mono & diglycerides, ethoxylated mono & diglycerides), soybean and/or cottonseed oil, calcium peroxide, calcium sulfate, calcium propionate (to retard spoilage), lecithin

I'm on OWL and determined to eat bread again. I tried making mhampton's recipe. Three times I tried, and three times I failed (but I will try again). Even if I bothered eating the 1"-2" loafs I ended up with, I still calculated the net carbs to be about 6-8g per slice.

The loaf above is 6g net carbs, and way less time to prepare.

What do you think? Is there anything in the ingredient list that throws up red flags? Seems to good to be true. FYI, they also make a Whole Wheat loaf which has the same net carbs (but probably different in other nutritional info).

I am in maintenence (and still losing) and I eat low carb bread. I would definetely try this bread myself. You could try it and see. Im finding being in maintenence that certain things that I try to add back in do cause cravings. Like, yogurt, for some reason when I eat it, I find myself craving things that I havent had in a long time. So, I dont eat it anymore!! But, at the same time, I have added back in fried chicken breast from KFC and it doesnt effect me at all.
Just pay attention and make mental note after you eat it (usually takes me a couple of hours after eating).....and definetely start with just one peice. Hope this helps....
Vicky

I wasn't allowed Wonder Bread as a child, and when I had it at a friend's house I was appalled by it's tendency to become a congealed mass of glutton that gets stuck to the roof of your mouth. eeeewwww.

I was so excited when I heard about this product a few weeks ago! This has always been my bread company of choice for healthy yet still yummy breads, and this one is actually pretty good (not quite as yummy as their non-low crb loaves, but much better and larger than other ones on the market) I keep trying to get my DH take a tour of their plant, but to no avail (I suppose touring a bread company does sound a little lame)

I started using Nature's Own last week and I love it. I only have one slice in the a.m. with my egg but it makes all the difference. My son doesn't know the difference between this and the other bread I was buying in the past. I have tried other low carb breads (including making my own with Atkins mix) and I did not like it. Is it just me, or are low carbers beginning to influence the market?

I live in Minneapolis, and most of the local grocery stores carry Village Hearth lite breads -- Italian, 12 Grain, and Wheat.

I love the 12 Grain for sandwiches and the Italian for bruschetta, BLTs, and grilled cheese! 5 net carbs per slice, and it tastes just like normal bread.
