" Uncontacted Indian tribe spotted in Brazil

Fri May 30, 12:07 AM ET

One of Brazil's last uncontacted Indian tribes has been spotted in the far western Amazon jungle near the Peruvian border, the National Indian Foundation said Thursday.

The Indians were sighted in an Ethno-Environmental Protected Area along the Envira River in flights over remote Acre state, said the Brazilian government foundation, known as Funai.

Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and a large planted area. But it was not known to which tribe they belonged, the group said.

"Four distinct isolated peoples exist in this region, whom we have accompanied for 20 years," Funai expert Jose Carlos Meirelles Junior said in a statement.

The tribe sighted recently is one of the last not to be contacted by officials. Funai does not make contact with such tribes Indians and prevents invasions of their land to ensure their autonomy, the foundation said.

Survival International said the Indians are in danger from illegal logging in Peru, which is driving tribes over the border and could lead to conflict with the estimated 500 uncontacted Indians now living on the Brazilian side.

There are more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru, the group said in a statement.

"These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist," Survival director Stephen Corry said.

"The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct.""

This is from Associated Press.

What caught my eye was the government's assertion that the warriors were "strong and healthy". I wonder just what they eat?

I really wish I could find out. News like this could give us clues to not only how we ourselves evolved, in different places around the world, but to how our bodies are meant to be fueled.

I'm curious as to what they eat too, not that a fully untouched tribe couldn't have bizarre eating customs that have nothing to do with health. I would want to know with certainty how long they lived.

I can't imagine that wild peoples, even if they are mostly fruit eaters, wouldn't eat a lot of eggs. I had four for breakfast.

Huh.

I must be gettin' cynical in my old age... the first thing that came to mind was the Tasaday.

But I'll admit, I'm quite curious as to what a real untouched tribe with "strong and healthy" warriors is eating these days...

Is there another article that says "Bows and Arrows"?

But it is odd that they can tell from the aerial photos that the people on the ground were "warriors", as well as determine their strength and health.

I guess the 'large planted area' in the first post article is the jungle? LOL

A fly-by medical exam. Dang that's efficient.

Well, we can be sure they're not eating processed junk.

What I don't see is what I am used to from my summer hiking trips to the mounds of central Florida: Large trash piles of bones, clam shells, egg shells, rotten food etc, that almost every tribe makes in just a few months.

Compost! Although from the pics, it appears there is quite a bit of debris surrounding the huts.
When I first read this, I had a Gary Larson Moment:
When the tribe saw the approaching aircraft, they used their special code term ("anthropologists!"), quickly alerting their peers to hide the televisions and laptops.
That was my favorite cartoon of all time.

I sat here craning my head sideways, as if that would help, trying to figure out what the hell color these people really were and if they were anything like the 'humanoids' on star trek or if it just looks that way from a distance.

I think it's very cool that they are not bothering these people. I'm actually kind of astounded they've managed to keep them safe from that. Seems like there'd be all kinds of interest in pushing that envelope.

You have to wonder WTF these guys were thinking about the helicopter, of course. Give it a few years and there'll be a god named by the initials on the side of it.
