Default Pork scratchings

Mostly known as pork rinds on the forum..

Does anyone know where they sell carb free/sugar free ones in the UK? So many recipes on here call for them, or even just great as a snack, but ones in Sainsburys are loaded with terrible stuff and I just can't find any plain ones.

It appears that all pork scratchings/cracklings in UK have some starch and sugar in them
The ones I buy to use in recipes have less than 0.1 gram of carbs per 100 grams so I don't think they have enough no-no ingredients to worry about.

They are made by Green Top, and are described here http://www.porkscratching.com/products.php

I buy them in packets of 6 x 17 gram packs from G&T - a cheapo-type of shop in the Bournemouth area for £1.00 per packet.

You could contact the company
http://www.porkscratching.com/contact.php
and ask them for details of which chains of shops in your area they supply.

Here are the numbers for them
Quote:
Per 100 grams
Cals 650
Protein 44.2 gr
Fat 52.2 gr
inc sat fat 18.8 gr
mono 26.2 gr
polyunsat 5.2 gr
Carbs Less than 0.1 gr

If you have a chinese supermarket nearby, get yourself to it! They should have bags of "Pork Gratons" (also spelled Grattons, but Gratons is what is on my pack). They look like golden styrofoam packing chips! The ingredients are pork rind, animal fat (errr), salt and antioxidant E320. FYI the brand I have is Oriental Kitchen and they name of the product is Kiap Moo. They sell another one at Wing Yip in Manchester but I can't remember the name and they contain MSG (but they are really yummy).

I think in some American recipes where they call for pork rinds, they mean this stuff, it looks like you could get some decent low-carb bakery sustitutes from it, but I eat mine as they come. They're not as filling as pub style scratchings but they have a lot less rubbish in them.

HTH!

edit - here they are! http://shop.waiyeehong.com/index.ph...roducts_id=2880

I bought some Pork scratchings from a local shop to try as a substitute for crisps and ewwwwwwww

Why I needed a substitute for something I never ate much I will never know

Think I shall just microwave pepperoni slices till crispy mmm

Chicken Bites from Asda are pretty nice for a snack with flavour too

From time to time I make cheese 'crackers' by microwaving or baking little piles of grated cheese (or cubes of block cheese) till they spread out and crisp up.
They keep for ages in an airtight container and don't need refridgerating either.
Recently I discovered a stash of them under the car seat which must have been there for a few weeks or longer (can't remember the last time I made some) and they tasted just as good.

Your local butchers may sell them, i use to buy them ages ago from a butcher in London, proper pork scratchings, not the commercial type.

Hope that helps

I love pork scratchings, but all the ones I find have wheat in them (WHY?) and I'm gluten unfriendly!

As well as the ones from the chinese supermarket, they are also selling porkrinds which are just rind, fat and salt AND NOTHING ELSE at Lidl in their new sodergarden range (which I tested the first day they came out - v. good)
