Default "Healthy" Breakfast idea!

From Real Simple -

A doughnut and chocolate milk!

It's okay...it's a plain doughnut and lowfat milk.

Remember those little packages of hostess donuts? I could devour a whole package in the blink of an eye.

Yup I do.. I think I'd eat 1 pk + one of the pies.. my mom used to buy TONS of that stuff.. I mean tons. We lived by the Hostess bakery.. and she would go one time a month and buys bags and bags full of 'snacks' for us at the outlet store.. Ya this is what she fed us.. then said we were overweight..

Here's something odd. As a kid, doughnuts were just plain old gross. As an adult they became glorious. I crave doughnuts even to this very day and I have had no doughnuts in 9 years. That is so hard to reject a glazed doughnut. Ugh, did I just say glazed doughnut?

I have a thing for cake donuts. I don't particularly crave any other kind, but any cake donut is something I like.

You wont believe the current craze in India about a healthy "oatmeal" breakfast. And when I tell them its really not that healthy, they look at me like I am a little crazy, and quickly change the subject.

I only really like fresh Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

And since I'm 2 hours away from where they sell them, this rule works for me.

I am also aghast at this "healthy breakfast" suggestion. It's really come down to that, hasn't it? As long as it's low fat, it's healthy?

I am fortunate that I never really liked donuts except those little hostess ones. They're just too grossly sugary for me. I'm one that doesn't like icing on cake 99% of the time.

I think it's hilarious how this has become a discussion of doughnuts.

That said.. ...the last time I had a doughnut was New Year's Eve, 1999. A friend was in from out of town for a party we were all going to. She brought a big box of Dunkin' Donuts to my house. I ate several (the only thing I ate all day) and drank a lot of coffee to help me stay awake for the New Year. When we got to the party I took ONE sip of champagne and immediately had the worst heartburn I had ever had. I was unable to eat even a bite of any of the food or drink any of the liquor at the party. It was quite a memorable millenium celebration, lol. The good thing was I learned early what the real cause of GERD is (carbs), and so was able to ignore the advice of my doctor, who told me to avoid fatty foods.

Yeah, those chocolate cakey ones at Dunkin Donuts were the only ones I cared about. Never was a donut person, really. That or pizza--which makes the two big office foods really easy to turn down, so I lucked out there.

On topic-ish, it's the new year so we're going to get blitzed with diet stuff like this now. Something tells me it's going to be more schizophrenic and contradictory than ever this year. I feel like 'conventional diet wisdom' has hit some of misinformation critical mass at this point.

(I was sad to see that one of my respected foodie writers, Mark Bittman, had a big article in one of my cooking magazines this month about how we should all go mostly vegan.)

I read an article online by Mark Bittman some months ago in which he talked about how he is vegan most of the time (before dinner, I think). He got hammered in the comments section by outraged vegans who pointed out (rightly so) that someone who eats meat is by no means a vegan.

(I guess that was OT, too. )

Good point. (I didn't make it past the article description, honestly.) I guess this sort of typifies the 'schizophrenia' I was referring to these days--how on earth can you be 'mostly' vegan? Isn't that just another way of saying 'omnivorous'? I didn't even catch that.
