Default Why We Get Fat: Adiposity 101 and the Alternative Hypothesis of Obesity

Gary Taubes' latest talk at UW is available online.
Why We Get Fat: Adiposity 101 and the Alternative Hypothesis of Obesity

I would say that it is definitely his best one yet.

Enjoy!

There is a longer question and answer session at the end of this that's worth listening to. A lot of the slides are similar to previous lectures. This is a nice presentation as you can move through the slides easily.

Yes it's very nice that they did not remove this part. It's much appreciated and informative.

Gary seems to really acknowledge that fructose and Omega 6 could be the cause of insulin resistance. And then once you are insulin resistant, you are sensitive to all carbs.

Did you catch the bit right at the end of the question and answer session where he was saying he'd talked to Lustig, was hoping to write a book on fructose with Lustig but there were fundamental differences that he is going to try to work through. I think it would be a great book, and I don't think either have to compromise their understandings.
I think we are all mature enough to understand that knowledge in this area is developing fast and it is reasonable to present different opinions or viewpoints side by side, in a single volume so the reader can make their own minds up. It could be a very enlightening debate.

Yes I did catch that. It sounds very interesting indeed.

I didnt really like Taubes attitude during the lecture, he seemed forever rushed, complained about the time of day it was given, and showed a lack of passion for what he was talking about in parts.

I dont know if I should really be surprised as 90% of it is rehashed material from his previous lecture that is available online.

Also at the end part of the lecture it was dissapointing to see Taubes hiding behind the fructose and HFCS smoke screen of 'bad carbs'. Yes we know Fructose is really bad. Move along now please?

Taubes is just not a very good speaker IMO.

It's the message that is important. Not his Carbohydrate Hypothesis, but the anti lipid hypothesis message AND the Calories In and Calories Out are biologically linked message.

I agree, but ... Taubes is not a very good speaker. I think one of the reason Dr Lustig's YouTube presentation (Sugar: The Bitter Truth) got so famous is that he is a great speaker, even though he rushed through some of the later slides as well.

Yeah, I actually thought of Lustig as a good one when you said that Taubes is not a good one.

Part of the reason for the rush at the videod version of the talk was that Taubes had 2 speaking engagements in Seattle that same day.

Later that day he was at University of Washington

You can read Stephan's account here

I suspect he overran and answered more questions at the second session but that isn't surprising.

I still think this is the best version online. I'm still very grateful for all the work Taubes in in producing the book. If it wasn't for reading his book as realizing exercise was NOT a NECESSARY component for effective weight loss I would still look like this and probably I would have deteriorated further and been wheelchair bound by now.
I accept that some of the other interventions I did prior to eliminating carbs (the D3, omega 3, magnesium) also give my mitochondria an advantage but basically if it wasn't for Taubes I'd be in a bad way by now.
