I was diagnosed about 5 weeks ago. I immediately began a low carb high fat diet.
The benefits so far:
1- I do not have to take any medications to keep my BG in normal ranges. Burning fat is amazing.
2- My energy levels have zoomed up. It's amazing.
3- I looked at my hands the other day, studying them for the first time in ages. My liver spots have almost all disappeared. Not exactly sure what that means, but I always wondered if their appearance was just normal aging.
4- The return of an active sex life.
5- After sitting down for a time, when I get up, my legs do not feel stiff and tired out.
6- I need less hours of sleep at night.
7- When I wake up in the A.M. I do not feel tired. I can get right out of bed with my eyes wide open and start my day without any sluggishness.
8- Half the nights I actually sleep the night through, without having to wake up to urinate. Before I was waking up maybe 3 or 4 times. I take this to mean my kidneys are recovering. I also pee less during the day.
If I think of anything else I'll enter it in this thread. But I feel that my life has been turned around.
i noticed that when my BS goes high, I get dry flaky scaling skin on my fingers, and after several days of low carbing and good control, it goes away, but if I ate some carbs, it would come right back. I don't know what causes it, but I am going to stay with my Atkins/Bernstein LC diet for the rest of my life, to control my DM bype 2.
My OH found the weight dropped off for months, and has now stabilised. His BS readings are very low, always in the 6-7 range; his cholestrol went down to 3.4. But lately he feels constantly tired, not sure what this is.
