Default "I've certainly seen you before,

although you may not have seen me." (Miss Scarlet, Clue)

Hello! I've been lurking on the site off and on since 2004, when I lost 25 lbs using the South Beach Diet, but this is my very first post here ever.

Over the years, I've continued to incorporate many of the principles I learned from low-carb eating in order to maintain my weight. However, following the birth of my son two years ago, I've really struggled to lose weight. When he was three months old, I did Paleo for a couple of months, but after not losing a single pound in all that time, I gave up. Once he weaned, I tried again, with the same disheartening results. After my second unsuccessful attempt to lose the baby weight, I've had a hard time motivating myself to return to low carb.

But, I've now managed to talk myself back onto the wagon. On January 9th, I began Whole30. As of yesterday (I was weighed at a doctor's appointment), I had lost two pounds. I'm not going to lie -- I was rather disappointed with that number given how much I suffered last week and given that some (or all) of that was probably water weight. I decided today that I would try an even stricter approach by following Whole30 while also limiting carbs to <20.

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed (and depressed) by the thought of needing to lose 46 pounds, but I know many of you are facing even greater challenges. I decided to come out of lurkdom for the accountability and support the board offers. So, here I am!

Hi and welcome out of long term lurkdom,
I would be overwhelmed by the challenge you have given yourself too and will suggest you rethink it. Whole30 is an elimination diet to determine food sensitivities and reset addictions to unhealthy SAD foods. It has never been a weight loss diet, nor is it that LC. I just read Mellissa's two new books, inc the Cookbook as her recipes are good (found a few new bloggers I didn't know about before) and can't fathom how you could do both without getting more depressed

It appears that your #1 goal at this point is weight loss and under 20g total carbs is a plan that works for many. My suggestion would be to do that for now. Many of us will overlay primal/Paleo food quality guidelines onto it. I buy grass-fed and organic only when possible and reasonably priced, avoid processed seed oils, make my own mayo, but don't obsess when eating out, etc. If I need to lose weight, then stick to a strict 20g clinic plan and eliminate wine, nuts, but keep small amounts of dairy for my sanity (read coffee with cream ).

Consider starting a journal or join a Buddy thread for accountability. Also check success stories for inspiration, Renee used the Dr Westman 20g clinic plan. http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=473612 You know how this forum works (and can search the entire site by using Advanced Search) for answers to any questions. All the best

Welcome back, mmbk. It does take True Grit to get back on that wagon, so you're to be congratulated.

given how much I suffered last week
Let me just say that a successful diet--for weight loss, weight maintenance, long life, and good health--CANNOT BE ABOUT SUFFERING.

One of the reasons I enjoyed following the "teachings" of Dr. Atkins from way back in 1972 is that he insists that a low-carbohydrate diet is about luxury, deliciousness, many choices, and self-esteem. You might enjoy picking up that original book, Dr. Atkins's Diet Revolution. My old paperback is really yellow and dog-eared by now.

For a more modern take on Atkins, I also suggest the Westman Diet developed at Duke by a follower of Dr. Atkins. It has food lists and guidance that are simple, to start, and effective long-term.

If you are suffering, you cannot sustain the endurance to stick out the long process of losing weight. It Just. Takes. Time. And when you DO get close to what you consider a healthy weight, you'll want to be eating a maintenance diet that you actually like, or guess what? You'll go back to what you used to eat, and get back all the weight you used to have.

Don't suffer. Eat real foods you like from the low-carb lists, in quantities that satisfy. That's it. Butter and bacon are included.

Bon appetit.

P. S. And give yourself some wiggle room! You're 13 years older than you were when you picked a target weight of 120, and also a mother. Get real. And please don't be in a hurry.
