Question Low Fat Milk - When is it ok to drink with your meals?

I'm a newbie and have a question regarding when it is ok to drink low fat milk. As far as i know it is ok with your breakfast, but is it also ok with any other meals throughout the day?

Any thoughts?

I think you can have milk with any kind of meal or snack as long as it is skim milk. If it were not skim milk, I would keep it for protein meals.

After all, cheese is milk with fat and you can have it with protein meals.
You can have no-fat yoghurt with fruits.

Hope this makes sense to you...

OK, so now I see were it might be a problem. Skim milk has 13g of Carbs in a serving so it may be better to use it only with high carbs meals (usually breakfasts).

Anyone else has a thought about this, I’m getting lonely around here!

Julie, I never heard of any kind of low carbs milk. Or maybe it’s called cheese!
Seriously, whole milk will contains less carbs because there is less milk in it (the fat takes it’s place and that fat has 0 carb). I don’t know a thing about soy milk so I can not help you there. Can you tell me more about that low carbs milk?

Interesting...

However, FULL FAT milk has a GI of 27 (based on average of 5 measurements) and GL or 3. Making it more than fine to drink on Montignac or other similar plans - where the emphasis is on unprocessed or refined foods where "not all carbs are created equal".

Lactose, the sugar in milk, is a disaccharide and is digested into its 2 component sugars before absorption. This slowed down absorption is what lowers the GI and GL levels to very acceptable levels. Plus the presence of protein and fat in milk lower the GI / GL too. I don't have the figures for any type of reduced fat milk, but it would be slightly higher than for full fat because of above.

I had a look at Hood Carb Countdown low carb milk that the above link goes to, and I won't be using it. It is described as a "dairy beverage", which to me is like describing Sunny Delight as "a fruit juice beverage". They don't seem to list ingredients or how the milk has been processed.
