running is definitely a "listen-to-your-body" type of thing. If it doesn't hurt it probably isn't hurting you. If it does hurt then the hurt that you do can become permanant if you force it. Running injuries are so common. Even near 200 lb. you can run short distances, although that might not be much of a cardio experience. It's still great for getting your legs toned though. It will build some strength if you do sprints; no significant strength for long distance jogging.

If you try it then do this: during the first time you jog pay close attention to how your legs, knees, hips, feet, and whatever have NO pain whatsoever. Remember that feeling. Because when you have been jogging for a while and pain starts to come, you can compare it to how it was on your first mile. A person need never have pain while running. Pain is a sign of overuse, and you need to take it seriously.

Also know that you can stay in decent (if not particularly impressive) conditioning running twice a week for 15 minutes. I say that because some people who are well aware that they are at risk of injury - they are in pain - are afraid to cut back because they have gotten into their heads this idea that running has to be 6 days a week at an hour a session. That has some merit for competition, but not for health.

Hey wegotdis,

I am sorry you are no longer able to run I recently had a brain concussion and went out running too quickly and eventually reconcussed. My injury was very minor compared to what you've been through, but I think in your situation I would look for a different activity. Can you get cleared for deep water running, maybe? That is an excellent workout and it's easy to stay low carb - AND no chance of further permanent brain injury, because that is not fun.

You do not even have to hit your head to reactivate a brain injury. It's the one injury I would take no chances with, because damage is permanent.

No... he should wear the helmet when riding his motorcycle. If he had been wearing it when he crashed (both times!) he wouldn't be in this situation to begin with.

I don't think running is a good idea either.

I certainly agree with your thought on this...but that was not what he was asking.

thanx brpssm! Walking is what I will do. I think I may get some weights and strap them around my ankles just to make it harder. Hopefully it will be something like the feeling that running gives. I'm just stuck with what running does. I hope walking will do the same. This way come thanksgiving I can be me.

Hi jschwab. Thanks for helping and giving new idea's, but truth is my doc said to stay out of water and steam rooms cause they will raise my blood pressure. I don't know much about blood pressure but I do know a high reading can be really dangerous. She says to walk. I am thinking to try lifting again. I hope its ok but when I lay flat, I get so much pressure in my head I have to sit up. My ankles stay swollen except when i run, but I won't be running until I lose at least 75lbs. I have got to try something to get this weight off. I learned not too long ago that the pills the doc has me on, makes me gain weight. It is why I know running will help the most, but I won't run anymore for a while. But thank you.

That sucks. I know how you feel about walking not being the same. I would just be careful carrying weights on your ankles - you can get some pretty bad stress injuries from that. If I were going to try weights and walking, I would probably carry handheld weights or maybe get a weight vest (although this can put pressure on the spine). It sounds like you are just done with sitting around and resting. I am over in the Triple Didgits Club, too.
