Default Running and shin pains...

Hi all,

I'm in my 4th week of atkins and have loved everything about this WOE so far.

My query is more exercise-related. I go to the gym 3/4 times a week and enjoy running for about 35mins each time. Recently however I've begun to suffer terribly from splintering pain in my shins... so much so that I struggled to walk further than 1/2 a mile the next day. Needless to say I've not been running for about a month after that happened to try and allow my body to recover.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what could alleviate this? I am tall at 6ft 1 which I appreciate places more impact on my bones but I wear specialist running shoes/socks and warm-up etc.

If anyone has any ideas of what I can do to prevent these as far as I can I'd be really grateful, I miss running!

Thanks x

I got some relief from Zensah sleeves that I wore continuously for maybe 6 weeks - even at night. I also used ice & Tiger Balm

Do you stretch your calves and shins? And, I hate to say this, but running outside instead of on the treadmill mght help (maybe you are on an indoor track?). Stability shoes are often a cause of shinsplints if you don't really need them. You might just need to tweak your shoes ( I know, that means $$ but it's worth experimenting). I am also a huge fan of Zensah sleeves and use them to deal with calf strain.

I exercise alot at the gym & do about 6 spin classes a week. Monday I attempted a run, outdoors. OMG my shins killed me.
i was wearing Nike impact running shoes. They day after i had a slight aching pain.
A work colleague who used to run alot has told me to take 3 tea spoons of bicarbonate of soda an hour before and i should not get any pain. Ive not yet tried it, and it sounds disgusting. I saw your post and thought of the advice he gave me.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

I think as soon as the weather improves I shall see how running outdoors works out - I tend to get bored on the treadmill so it may help in more than one way.

Peauk - bicarb?! blimey! I'm willing to give anything a pop though so may try and disolve some in water and knock it back before I get to the gym... I shall let you know how I get on.
