Low-Carb Craze: Are You Getting The Truth?

The low-carb diet is one of the hottest crazes right now, but it seems all kinds of foods are labeled low-carb. Which ones are the real deals? Consumer reporter Tracy Davidson went looking for answers.

"Right now, it's a little 'buyer beware,'" said Dr. James Hill of the Center for Human Nutrition.

If some of those low-carb and net-carb claims seem too good to be true, guess what? In some cases, they may be.

"The FDA is not policing it at this moment, so there are a lot of strange things out there," explained Dr. Lester Crawford, of the Food and Drug Administration.

The words "net carbs" are popping up on food packaging everywhere. But do you know what a net carb is?

Diet guru Dr. Robert Atkins coined the term, suggesting that net carbs are the only carbs that affect blood sugar levels.

According to the Atkins diet, you take total carbs and subtract dietary fiber and sugar alcohols and that gives you your net carbs.

But the FDA has a different take. Davidson traveled to Washington for an exclusive sit-down interview with Crawford to talk about net carbs.

Davidson asked what it means if she sees something that says two net carbs on the front of the package.

"Net carb has no meaning on the label at this point," Crawford said.

Crawford said adherence to quality control in labeling is usually not as good in an industry until the FDA gets involved.

The NBC 10 Consumer alert team and several other NBC stations tested low-carb products to see how accurate the labels were. They were tested for total carbs.

Ian's Natural Foods Pizza claims it has 24 total carbs. Our tests reveal it actually has 73.2 carbs. Ian's released a statement saying that they are having the crust retested.

Subway claims its chicken bacon ranch wrap has 19 total grams. However, our tests show 26 total grams.

Subway said it was concerned about the results our tests revealed.

"We continually test and retest out products and are currently in the process of having our suppliers confirm that the items they produce adhere to our specifications."

The FDA is under a lot of pressure right now to regulate low-carb claims, so that consumers are better protected. Next week, for the first time, it will come out with recommendations.

I ate at least 15 Subway wraps during January. I also lost 11 lbs that month - despite being on a plateau for several months before that. PLEASE don't abandon these wraps until more evidence is in - OR, your own results show otherwise.

Gotbeer,
Maybe you just needed to increase your carbs to get off the plateau.
They won't abandon them just change the number.

Subway makes of point of saying "net carbs."
