Default Dr. Lutz has died at 98

Not sure if this belongs here or not.

Many of us read Dr. Lutz's book - Life Without Bread - and learned a great deal from it. Dr. Eades just posted the following on Twitter.

The most influential low-carb doc in Europe, Wolfgang Lutz (Life without Bread) died at age 98 on 9-18-10 in his home in Graz, Austria. RIP

(Ornish will probably say his diet killed him.)

Unhappy Sad to hear

I was particularly inspired by "Life Without Bread" so it is a pity to hear of his death. He will be missed, however the lives that he has changed and inspired are an extremely good epitaph.

I was going to say something similar. Just waiting for the bloggers to blame his diet. Cut down in his prime. If only he'd eaten low-fat, he might have lived to 125.

Or as Jack LaLanne (currently 96) says: "I cannot afford to die, it will ruin my image."

Default Wolfgang Lutz lived to be 97

I don't know when he bacame lc but he was recommending that woe since the '60's.
Many of you know more than me. Life w/o Bread is a at the top of many lc go to list for info.
97 is not too shabby. I do not know the cause of death but even if it was heart disease, that's almost 100!!
That is strong evidence for a lc woe.

I haven't read Live Without Bread yet. I'm going to order it and find out for myself why so many people respected Dr Lutz. May he rest in peace.

How could anyone blame diet when you die at 98! He lived a longer than normal life.

I also was inspired by Life Without Bread, and wrote the first Amazon review of it. It's not a "diet book." Instead, it's a summary of Dr. Lutz's findings from using the low-carb diet in his medical practice for decades. He discusses a wide range of medical issues and avoids making wild claims. For example, he notes that the response of blood pressure to carb restriction diminishes somewhat with age.

His approach to carb restriction will seem overly simple to most people here. It is: reduce carbs to 72g/day. That's all. Three meals; 24g per meal. There's no discussion of "good" and "bad" carbs; no discussion of which fats to prefer. Just 72g/day. If that doesn't work; reduce it a bit more. There's also some commentary about the need for some people to reduce gradually. But anyone hoping for a "new twist" or variation on low-carb won't find it in this book. I think Dr. Lutz understood that simplicity helps people to stay on the diet. Also, restricting carbs more than actually necessary to yield positive results would make compliance more difficult. To most people here, 72g/day will seem like a very generous amount of carbs.

funny how this guy w a straight forward, simple approach w/o the rules we have created for ourselves, lived to be 98.

i often wonder if the 'politically correct' version of lc, that we have created, is hurting us. mainly causing us lc yo-yo ing, inability to stick w it, and just generally disordered eating.

we go on and on about how veg oil and soy, etc are bad for us and peop like Lutz, Bernstein and Atkins (had he lived) do not have all these diseases that are supposedly caused by these many items.

i just wonder if we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Well,--- um, we are only shooting ourselves in the foot if it turns out that soy, the other polyunsaturated seed oils, and non paleo foods bring us eternal youth. I dunno, I've read enough on the various nutritional blogs that these issues are related and they all have a simple cause. We evolved a stupidly large creative brain that led us away from the sun and into large agricultural silos filled with carbs and oils from invented sources. Sure dropping just carbs alone will help you with weight control, but what about diseases -- especially cancer, and heart disease? For eternal youth I'm betting on bacon fat from wild boar, but yes, I'm only about halfway there in practice.
