Default how much is in a cup?

Hi havent posted before. I have just come back after trying atkins from years ago. What I get confused with is, how much is in a cup of veg or salad. I dont have american cups so would appreciate an imperial or metric measure. Thanks in advance, its must have been asked before so sorry to ask again I cant find any conversion in here.

I have always wanted to know the weight in oz of a serving of lettuce, spinach, other leafy greens etc. It is so hard to measure a cup of romaine leaf!

I would use a scale instead and count it by weight instead.

Yes, that's what I was asking, how much does a serving weigh?

Well, what do you have to work with?

They're telling you a "serving" might be a cup, but does it also list a weight somewhere? Does it give you calories or carbs? You could go look it up on a nutrition database and you'll find they show that 300g of X has 15 carbs. Then you could figure out from that how much the package is showing you.

In the US if they show a serving like 1/2 cup then they'll also show how many grams it is.

Sorry, just noticed this is a UK group so my advice might not be so helpful.

You can look up hoow many grams in a cup of most foods here
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

and you can also download a copy of the database to use when offline

Thank you so much elizellen! This is exactly the type of info I was looking for!
I have done various google searches for this type of site but I've never come up with the right answers! I'm in the US but I do weigh everything on my scale--meats, cheese, etc. I couldn't figure out how to measure vegetables--if I cut them large, I fit less in a cup, if I cut them small, I fit more... do I pack the leafy veggies or leave them loose in the cup? The questions were endless, and now I can enter all my queries in this handy website. Thanks for the link, cheers!

You are right - the 'cup' thing does leave a lot of leeway depending on how small you cut up your vegetables. So weighing is a better option in my mind.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess It would be better to weigh some salad food or veg rather than guessimate how much you are packing into a 250ml cup. Son tells me it like trying to weigh a ton of feathers against a ton of lead.....they weigh the same....but the mass is completely different.
I might look out for american cups that are wide enough so you arent packing the food in too much.

I live in the UK and got a little jug in Tesco's the other day which was £1.50 and shows the american cup & half cup sizes on it.
Just what i needed, but i do tend to weigh most things. Much to my husbands amusement!!

That is amazing! I have also struggled with the whole cup measurement vs. weight of foods and have been looking for a proper conversion. Thank you!
