Default Turmeric

My doctor (an MD!) suggested I take turmeric for inflammation from a possible bone spur in my toe. I started taking one 500mg capsule a day and my BG - both FBG & between meals - has been steadily dropping.

This morning my FBG was 82!!!!! It's never been that low.

So I googled it & found it can reduce BG. Hooray! I've tried other things such as cinnamon & that thickener I can't remember the name of, but they didn't do anything for me.

Has anyone else tried it? Any long-term drawbacks?

I cook quite a bit with turmeric - love the strange flavor. I have read of the benefits to health and just accept them. Have never heard of any drawbacks. It seems like a well-tested remedy for inflammation. Turmeric is also the base for curry powder.

I've seen quite a lot of good info about curcumin. It is really being touted as a supplement to lower inflammation. A few days ago I read about a study in which arthritis sufferers took curcumin or an NSAID for their pain and the curcumin gave better relief, and no side effects.

The People's Pharmacy are fans...they had a recent article with the studies linked. http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2015...old-for-health/
I use to make the world's simplest dip for vegetables...add curry powder to mayonaise...maybe need to revive that one.

Ohh, great idea! I'll have to try that.

Turmeric is also touted for being an anti-cancer agent. I sprinkle turmeric on my fried eggs along with some black pepper. Adds a nice taste.

I tried it and, like most supplements that get hyped, it did nothing for me except upset my GI tract. :\

I should try it again I suppose.

I think I'm the opposite of a placebo effect person.

I took it for awhile this spring for hip/leg pain. No obvious effect on bg. My husband takes it religously, for gout, but his bg has no change.

Bonnie, I looked at my very first post on the Dr Fung thread, and there is turmeric as a spice that helps BG. I wouldn't have added it unless it was on one of his posts or slides. Can't find it on IDM now, but give it a try.

If you do give it a sustained try, Bonnie, let us know if the results seem consistent and long lasting. Here's an article from Kris Gunnar (Authority Nutrition) on the benefits of turmeric. Although he does not directly mention lowering of blood glucose, many of the problems which he says turmeric will help can also be affected by high glucose: cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease.

It's a spice with a long history and it's unlikely to hurt you.

Here's a wonderful recipe I found for fish in a turmeric lemon and cream sauce.

I added some turmeric to a stir fry, in a larger quantity than usual. The next morning the bottom cotton of the sheet was bright yellow. Evidently, the way the curcumin leaves the body, is by sweat. Tried it a second time, this time 1/4teaspoon in a dressing. Next morning, yellow sheet again !

I use turmeric to treat my Raynaud's disease - works like a charm to reduce the number of episodes.

For those who don't know what it is, it's a very painful auto-immune disorder in which blood flow is reduced periodically to the extremities. My case is on the more severe side including fingers, toes, ears, and nose.

Yeah, me too Nancy. It did nothing for me either, though at least no GI issues.

So funny, lately I've been having some turmeric every day, but no yellow sheets for me!

That's interesting. I wonder why that would happen. Do anti-inflammatories have that effect?

Here's a warm drink made with turmeric that helped me with chronic knee pain:

It took several days before the turmeric began to help, though.
