Default Slowed Hair Growth

I have been on Atkins for roughly 4 weeks now.

Up until recently, facial hair was a HORRIBLE problem for me. I literally had to shave under my chin every single day and by the end of the day, I would have new bristle coming in.

I have discovered this week, the hair is growing in MUCH slower now. I went 3 days without the need to shave. It hasn't ceased, the hair was still there but nowhere near as thick.

Has anyone else had this benefit of low carbing??? I am wondering if there might be a chance that the hair growth will go away entirely???

I noticed the same. The hair growth does get a bit slow after low carb, probably because of low insulin levels that no longer stimulate the ovaries to release a lot to androgens

I noticed the same thing, too. I wish I could go more than a day without shaving, though.

I noticed that same thing!!! I am thankful. I to have to shave. I get so down about it and then I think...well I am thankful it is at least something I can do something about. Many have conditions that are deabilitating. We have to stay positive! One day without shaving for me is a GIFT!!

Thank you so much for this thread!

I've been serious for 8 days now. Last night I was wondering how long until the hair slows down. (grrr!)

A month. I won't freak out for at least a month! lol!

Oh it is good to know that low carbing might help with the hair! My kids call my pcos my "man hormones" because of my little white peach fuzz moustache and my little side burns. LOL I don't shave because mine is fine and blond and I am worried if I shave it will grow back thicker and black. I waxed a few times and not only did it hurt but it caused acne and ingrown hair so now I use a hair removal cream like Magic Powder for men's beards. LOL it works but I would love to not have the need to use it at all!

Hirsutis (hair growth on females on the face and other normally male-growth areas) is a hormonal thing. Probably when you get your eating together and your body starts getting a little healthier, it might help balance some of that.

Due to PCOS and a hysterectomy at age 35 I have been shaving chin hairs and side burns for years. The hair growth has slowed down a little bit since low carbing, but unfortunately I still have to remove those pesky hairs on a daily basis. On the places where I don't shave I have a lot of peach fuzz. Its the pits.

I noticed a slight difference in the speed of growth but not enough to not have to shave my chin daily... I decided to go for laser hair removal... BEST thing I could have ever ever done... I go every 8 weeks ( that is the length of each hair cycle) and I am almost all clear if it all... the ones that are coming through are now so blond they are see through...lol..... my next hair removal project will be the side burns via laser.

lowcarbjo, are laser hair removal treatments expensive? I would love to do that but I've never looked into it because of the expense.

........ I have side burns too.

It is but... soooooooo worth it.... you have to really check into the place doing it... where I go it's all operated by specialists, dermotologists... sadly many "salons and spas" offer laser and do not know what they are doing.... I pay $130.00 per treatment, go every 8-10 weeks and in only 3 treatments I am almost hair free.... I had dark coarse chin hairs which take a little more time to get rid of. But no more hairs, dark shadows, stubble.... I am so happy and feel like a woman now. It's amazing how it affects you inside!!

I was actually told by the person that would be doing my laser hair removal to get checked out for PCOS. (This was at my HMO cosmetic department.) Yesterday, I was diagnosed with a mild case of it. *sigh*

The same person explained to me that she would do it if I wanted, but if I had something like PCOS, it wouldn't be worth it because any slight hormonal changes will affect hair growth. I have very dark hair that I've been plucking away at for a year or so (thanks to Mom complaining) and was hoping for a permanent solution.

For those that have had good luck with this, congratulations. I've decided to save my money for the moment.

I disagree with the women you had the consultation with. I have severe PCOS and started to have laser treatment. I had three treatments on very coarse dark hair but had to stop temporarily due to finances. At least half the hair is gone and a year later has not returned and I had a lot of hair - chin, neck & sideburns. I think the results depend on the colour of hair being treated - mine was so dark that it was very effective. When I have the cash I plan on continuing the treatment.

It is important to check whether the treatment is laser or pulsed light, as pulsed light is nowhere near as effective.

Also if you have coarse hair, laser treatment can be quite painful so its worth paying a little extra for the anaesthetic gel.

I haven't looked into it yet, but I sure would like to. Its the expense that stops me, otherwise I would do it in a heartbeat. I noticed a hair removal place in Rochester the last time I was there. Maybe one day I will pop in and check it out. I sure would love to be done with those chin hairs.

Another recent low-carber with PCOS here! I had to regularly shave my chin hair twice a day. I would get five o'clock shadow! Within a week of starting Atkins induction, my hair growth decreased. I am now a month into low-carb dieting and still have to shave once per day, but I certainly have enjoyed this benefit of the diet! I had electrolosis on my upper lip as a teenager and it has been successful for many years. I am thinking of now doing electrolosis on my chin hairs.
