This is a very sad piece from the BBC website. I was struck by how the poor lass thought skipping her insulin and living on fat free jacket potato or pasta was OK.

There were several articles about this disorder recently. It's really scary. Some people eat lots of carbs and skip the insulin, allowing the blood sugar to rise to really dangerous levels.
Because doctors don't always prescribe low carb to diabetics, there is a tendency to put weight on I guess if you keep your blood glucose within the proper range by taking insulin. For someone who wants to lose weight, not taking the insulin is like magic - you eat and you lose, except that it's terribly dangerous, as this story shows.

She didn't think it was "fine"-- she knew that by keeping her BG very high, she excrete the calories through ketones

Sadly, roughly one in 3 type I women will develop an ED at some point in her lifetime. Being forced to count grams of carbohydrate and fat from such a young age, the feelings of guilt if the child/adult eats something "bad", the constant attention from family/friends/random strangers on what the person eats, the constant tracking of exercise, the pressure to always eat "right" and exercise, the often very worried and therefore CONTROLLING parents, etc......creates a perfect storm for many.

I am so sorry for this family's loss.
