Default Do you know any old low carbers? and how is their health?

I was just wondering about this.

I know alot of older people with many health problems who do low fat diets.

I am talking about over 65.

As a matter of fact, almost everyone I know over 65 have health issues.

I think you have to consider whether they're doing low carb *because* they have problems.

I know one who will soon turn 69 and other than a minor vision problem is in excellent health. His approach to healthy eating is to view food as nourishment to the body and not necessarily a means to simply satisfy the palate.

He avoids unhealthy carbs and other substances suspected by science to be detrimental to human health and seeks out the most nutrient dense foods available. Must be working as he takes no medications and is under treatment for absolutely nothing!

Jack La Lanne is sugar-free and in very good shape at close to 100

My grandma doesn't really eat any special diet, but avoids sugar, and is in her 90s and has no health problems.

The guy I know is 71, so I guess it must not be the same fellow.

His "LC bio."; started PP/PPLP in February 2002 and has not changed since. He never weighed over 155 his whole life so made the change to lower high triglycerides (150-250 range) which went down to 60 and have been in the 39-60 range since with HDL up to 65, from 48 initially, and in the 80 range now. He had a PSA of 5.6 in November 2001 and positive biopsy for prostate cancer in June 2002. Even though he had NO treatment, by Christmas 2002, his PSA was down to 2.5 and has stayed down - checked every 3 months. Only remember being sick twice in the past six years. He is retired, but actively working on fixing up an old farm - barns and house - which calls for a lot of physical effort. The sore muscles in the evening are gone in the morning.

How old is old? I'm thinking of the famous quote by Satchel Paige (?): "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you was?"

I'm 63.25 y/o. Low carb for about ten years. Went cross-country skiing for the first time today and lived to tell about it. (Not very far, but still....)

I've taken a thyroid supplement since I was in my 30s, but have no other health issues. But then, as my sisters and I often say, laughing, "Nobody in our family dies of anything." My dad is 94. Maybe I'm doomed to live forever!

Low-carb for Life, me.

The Eades look to be in there 60's, they seem pretty healthy.

There's one paleo dude, forget who, who is in his 70's and he is utterly ripped and looks absolutely fabulous.

Barry Groves and Monica. Dr Bernstein all in their mid 70's. Dr A was also in his '70's. those are 3 good examples.
i don't know if there are any zc'ers that have eaten the same for decades and done well. Bear had his arteries cleared in his 60's....maybe that has something to do w the over consumption of protien.
i'm sure others will chime in....

I am not in the "old" category yet, but I am tryin' At the age of fifty two , and holding, I have been doing low carb for 7 years and have had many health issues which are now a part of my past, or at least close to it.Those include migraines, itchy skin and joint pain. I have recently been diagnosed as being pre-diabetic and have been advised to continue to watch my carbs Which of course has been what I have been doing but now, even moreso. My only regrets is that I did not adhere to this diet years ago and that I didn't raise my kids this way.

I'm 67, at my high school weight, still working (logger), take no meds, never get sick-flu,colds, ect. I have been eating this way for about eight yrs. Lost eighty pounds the first four years. I have also lost a brother to diabetis and two more that will follow. They eat the low fat way, along with all their meds. Such a shame.

So ... how old is old, and how healthy is healthy. I'm 73, DH is 76+ and we're both still reasonably healthy. I have asthma and hypertension, DH has a very mild hypertension, we both take meds for those ailments ... other than that, we're reasonably fit and healthy and we've been low-carbing for about 4 or 5 years (can't remember for sure). (The ailments pre-dated the low-carbing) As long as we can still get out on a golf course carrying our own bags, that's good enough for me! Although a caddy would be lovely!!
