You do know that metformin is to treat diabetes. I do not think you need to increasing or decreasing the dosage on this without consulting the doctor. Did you mean another medication??? Or am I misunderstanding your question?

metformin is used to treat polycystic ovarys as that does the same thing as in diabetics, makes u resistant to insulin, it is unlincensed at the moment to treat PCOS but lost of women are on it, makes them more fertile and helps big time in weight loss

my doc told me to start takin two a day and if i dont have any sideaffects after 2 weeks to increase it to 3 times a day cz a low dosage wont do much, i am now on 3 a day and wondered if that wil speed up the weight loss as i have already loss 7 pounds in 6 weeks on it

Stay off the alcohol on metformin - you don't need to trash your liver. An occasional drink is OK. Binge or frequent drinking is not good on metformin and it puts you at a higher risk for a potentially fatal side effect: lactic acidosis.

PCOS is not quite the same thing as diabetes. There is often insulin resistance, but that is only a risk factor for diabetes - it is NOT diabetes. You're right that the metformin is given often for PCOS.

Metformin itself will not make you lose weight. The improvement in insulin resistance is what will do the trick. Each person needs a different dosage, and at your weight you may well need to go to 3 times a day. It takes a few months to start to see this in my experience. Exercise will certainly help because it is even more effective than metformin in improving insulin resistance.

However, over time as you lose weight, exercise and improve your insulin resistance, you may find that you have become too sensitive to the insulin your body puts out and are going hypoglycemic (that happened to me). It's definitely a balancing trick and the dosage you need will probably change over time if you're serious about losing weight and exercising.

I would always check with the Dr if you're going to up the dosage of met...it's a dangerous drug if you use too much of it.

One or two drinks over several hours probably won't cause you a problem, but just a heads up with that. When I was taking Metformin, I couldn't handle any alcohol at all; it would make me very, very nauseated.
Either way, I wouldn't suggest drinking enough to get drunk while taking Metformin.

I, too, found that metformin and alcohol do NOT mix pleasantly. I would have serious cramping and/or nausea. I am usually okay with one or two margaritas.. but I learned the hard way once that two and a half is TOO MANY.
