Default GERD-gal back on the wagon....

I postsed last week with questions about GERD and sat-fats. (Mainstream sources were telling me to avoid them, but I've done enough LC to be suspicious when I hear them saying that.)

The advice I got here was "Keto helps GERD."

SO... jumped back on the wagon and into Induction.

Now, I don't have a scale (well, I do, but it's not WORKING -- it may need new batteries, it may need to be replaced.... pity, because I loved that scale) so I don't know how I'm doing, loss-wise.

What I do know is that -- just like all the sources you folks showed me promised -- the GERD is gone.

Still have a gastroenterologist appt on Monday, and DO want to go through with that, for the full diagnostics. Make sure this is REALLY what's going on.

Guess I'm back on LC for keeps.

I remember seeing your thread and I didn't have time to reply, but what I wanted to add was this: if you haven't already, go gluten-free. Not just Atkins - that gets you 95% of the way there, but read every label and be very careful. My heartburn and reflux went away after I did this. If I accidentally gluten myself - and I've done so many times in the decade since I went gluten-free - that's my first clue that it happened.

That might not be the cause of every single case of GERD, but it doesn't hurt to give gluten-free eating a try.

See Dr Davis' blog and/or read Wheat Belly for more info.

(ETA) Oh, and of course, don't be surprised if your gastro poo-poos the idea that whatever you're eating has anything to do with it. You should just take purple pills instead, blah blah blah.

I am so happy the GERD is a thing of the past-- what a simple answer. Eating LC will get easier and easier as you find ne recipes that become a staple; as well as change in the shopping list. It really gets easier. Basically shop the outside and a few staples from the inner aisles.

That is terrific news! Glad it worked quickly and you didn't have to un-do the rebound effect from PPIs.

As Kristine mentioned, find the original Wheat Belly book. He has a list of the hidden places you can find wheat, (maltodextrin, food starches and the like) and if you are sensitive, they may bother you. If you do get even minor reflux, think back to what you ate and take note of additives, etc.

If you do an endoscopy now, gastro may likely find damage because you have only been reflux free for a week. You could end up with prescriptions for something that may heal on its own with more time.

They put me on a PPI... And I took two of them, total, ever. The headaches were so bad. It was the perfect excuse NOT to take them.

I see the doc tomorrow. I'm HOPING he accepts it when I tell him I went looking for dietary advice and what I found is working for me.

My primary reason for going to docs is always the testing/diagnoses. I tend to balk at prescriptions for most things, and to ignore their dietary advice.

My LC got off track years ago, in The Year of Five Funerals. You reach a point where you know the food you're looking at will kill you and go, "Great -- give me two."

Thing is, LC is still ingrained in me, and it's kind of the underlying "base" around how we eat. "That's not food. That's just carbs. You need some protein and FAT!" is a common concept around our house. My son knows he won't "survive" on a meal that isn't high fat protein. My daughter -- who would live on bread and fruit if I let her -- knows she won't be allowed to do X until she eats some real protein. They both know bread and grain aren't real foods -- they're FILLER.

My worst cheat since I started was last night. I went to an event that ended in a potluck. For various reasons, I wound up being LATE (and thus not having time to make/pick up anything).

Most of the food was carbs.

SOMEONE brought some chicken wings. I ate a few of those, the meat-part of some enchilada pie someone brought, and a little fresh fruit. And water.
(Someone had BLACKBERRIES!! Fruit never tastes so luciuos as when you're on LC, I swear... Induction, so it was forbidden fruit, to boot!)

I passed on the pasta, the brownies, all the crap.

I left, around 9:30, and was still hungry... Fortunately, there was a Zaxby's. and I got some naked wings. (Not eating spicy with GERD still in the background, and anything else would be sugar.)

Potlucks have been one of my downfalls, when I've tried to go back LC, lately. I'll do great, and then I'll have an evening event that's potluck... typically after I've been running all day without even time to pee, let alone eat. And...I'd find literally nothing to eat. MAYBE a touch of salad or a few veggies.

One thing I'm noticing right now is that GERD is a lot like morning sickness: If I go too long without eating, it acts up. It was "tickling" last night, and I didn't eat enough at the gathering to stave it off. Hence the Zaxby's, rather than waiting the 1/2 hour to drive home before scrounging for something. (Because I'm not full-out cooking at 10pm, no matter how hungry I am!) Granted, I hadn't eaten a lot during the day... some BP coffee for breakfast, and hubby made some egg salad at lunch. (He makes a GOOD egg salad.) But I didn't have much of it, because I was distracted. By about 6pm, I could feel things acting up... And the food-portion of the potluck even didn't start until around 8.

One good thing about the revival of LC/Keto in the years since you were on hiatus...you can find more LC, grain free snacks to throw in a purse for days like that. There are snack packs of meat and cheese, nice Italian ones, but now even Oscar Meyer has combos that work. Can get HB eggs in gas stations. I was shocked to find a larger display of LC Paleo bars in an airport newsagent. Epic Bars now everywhere, like Target. Those waxed cheeses, nuts, and more...never leave Home without them
Totally your call on the having that test, but not fun and not cheap

Certain foods will give me heartburn, and they are not all low-carb: bananas (but not plantains), tomato (especially combined with meat like spaghetti sauces), Avocado, cashews, pistachios, most seed oils, chicken liver and peanut butter.

Avoiding eating anything in the evenings is difficult, but it's the best bet.

Just an n=1 FYI, but my GERD was completely and miraculously cured overnight as soon as I went on CPAP.

I think food sensitivities of any sort are often behind GERD. Dairy does it to me.
