Default Totally amazing WOE

I have had a weight problem for most of my life.... have lost and gained the same 60 lbs. many times in the past 20 years. Last October I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. As a nurse, I new the symptoms, yet totally ignored them. I also know the long term affects of diabetes, and at my young age (44), I knew that this was not a good thing. So I was very determined, did all the right things; went to see the dietician, and went on an 1800 cal diabetic diet. I managed to loose some weight (about 25 lbs in 8 months) but struggled with cravings, and the more time that went by, the more I cheated. I felt deprived when everyone else was having donuts, and many times would give in knowing that it would not be good for my blood sugar (but I'll start being good again tomorrow). My blood sugars were getting out of control, I felt terrible all the time. My doctor had increased my glucaphage from twice a day to three times a day, and still had elevated BS. I knew I was out of control, and headed for all the terrible diabetic complications I see in many of the patients I care for. I started the Atkins diet on July 9 out of desperation (I was one of those nurses that used to say It's not good for you or your kidneys - based on what I had read in the newspapers ect.). Well, since starting Atkins..... my blood sugars are totally under control, I have more energy than ever. Weight loss has been 8 lbs., and my clothes are actually comfortable, and no longer tight. I would like to lose another 40 lbs, but even if I don't.... just knowing what this amazing WOE has done for my diabetes makes me determined to stay with it. I have had no desire to cheat, I don't crave carbs anymore. I feel so good. I work with many Dr's and nurses who are full of praise at how good I'm looking, until they find out how I'm doing it.... then I hear - thats not good for you, or they don't know the long term effects of that diet. My response to them is "If it's not good for you, then why do I feel so good", and " they may not know the long term effects of this diet, but they do know the long term effects of diabetes... and I choose not to loose my eyes, my legs, my kidneys ect. That usually shuts them up. Well, I have gone on much to long. I just wanted to say that every morning I get on this site to read the posts before I go in to work..... it gives me encouragement and knowledge. Keep up the good work!!!!!

Wow, Breauna, good for you, sticking to what you know works, in the face of so much 'professional' opposition. Well, what's medical 'fact' today is old news tomorrow, and hopefully medical professionals will soon come to see the value of low-carbing, especially for diabetes.

We have a few members here who are having lots of success with controlling diabetes through low-carbing, and it's so encouraging to hear! I have a lot of diabetes and heart disease in my immediate family, so one of the reasons I'm low-carbing is as a preventative measure.

Check out the diabetes forum if you haven't already, there's some good info there.
