Hopefully, this is the right place to ask. If you're doing intermittent fasting what do you do when you need to take meds that require food in the middle of a fasting period. I take pain meds as needed and that frequently disrupts my fast. :/

Meme, it's prolonged fasting we do not support here. IF has been discussed here for years.

Micha, would you be comfortable letting us know the name of the med? Maybe someone else who takes it can shed some light. I know a lot of time that it's recommended to be taken with food, it's because it can cause stomach discomfort, not necessarily that it's required for the med to work. I was on an iron supplement for a while that a lot of folks need to take with food, but my doc said it was actually better absorbed on an empty stomach - it's just that it made some people feel ill. I felt fine.

I take my BP meds and aspirin in the morning with coffee and a stalk of celery. It's good for the digestion too.

It may make a difference with the type of medication, but I know that a tablespoon or so of chia seeds mixed with water is often recommended on the various IF forums, the IDM Facebook page, etc.

The IDM FB Page is called Obesity Code Network. It’s moderators spend significant time writing and indexing fasting tips in Files and the page is searchable. In addition to the soaked chia seeds, a small amount of steamed greens like spinach in olive oil is another tip if medication must be taken with food.

Chia seeds sounds like a good compromise. You can also make a sort of goopy pudding with flax seeds. Another thing--I wouldn't worry too much about the "purity" of a fast. It really isn't established that absolutely no food is better than a tiny bit of food, Valter Longo has established that short periods of a fasting mimicking diet can have a strong beneficial effect. People will argue that only water-only is true fasting, but our metabolism doesn't work by semantics, there's an awful lot of territory between I can't believe I ate that whole pizza and I skipped a few meals, a bit of chia will still leave you way closer to that water fasted stated.
