Default Kids and Milk question....

With four kids we go through alot of milk - Would the full fat milk be better for them than skim? They are all on a modified version of Atkins as they eat what we eat, plus fruits and more veggies than we eat. They're big on dipping carrots/celery/apples into either Ranch dressing or peanut butter. Boy do I miss apples and peanut butter.......

Thanks for your input,
Veronica

Congratulations on teaching your children good eating habits!

Full fat milk is lower in carbs than skim, but IMHO there is no reason for drinking gallons of milk. If you are worried about calcium, dark green vegetables like broccoli and spinach, salmon and seeds like sesame contain lots of calcium.

3 oz. of canned sockeye salmon has 203.150 mg of calcium. 1 cup of cooked spinach has 244.800 mg and 1 Tbsp. of sesame seeds has 87.750 mg. 1 cup of full-fat milk contains 291.336 mg.

Call me old fashioned, but I think it's better to eat your food than to drink it!

These are the recommended daily allowances:

0 to 12 months 525 mg .
1 to 3 years 350 mg .
4 to 6 years 450 mg .
7 to 10 years 550 mg .
Breast feeding women 1250 mg
11 to 18 years, male 1000 mg
11 to 18 years, female 800 mg
19 + years 700 mg
