This summer, I rode 520 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive (mountains) while maintaining my low carb diet, ~20g/day. I brought macadamias and pepperoni for my snacks. I had one day where I bonked from pushing it too hard without stopping for a rest/food break. Otherwise, it was a good ride.
I rode the Seagull Century on the MD eastern shore a few weeks back, and brought the same snacks. I did all 100 miles on a pocketful of nuts and berries. I passed up on all of the snacks provided at the rest stops, sweetbreads and fruit, and kept hydrated with 0 calorie elecrolytes. I finished much stronger than last years ride and recovered very quickly.
I can see why some elite endurance athletes perform on ketogenic diets. It's working for me.
