It is stevia that has been altered in a lab. It has 3g carbs per packet, but it's from erythritol, a sugar alcohol. Is pricey. Not good to bake with and there are varying opinions on the taste.

I understand that's the stuff the Pepsi and Coca-Cola companies are lobbying the FDA about right now. They want permission to use it to sweeten their products. IMO, "Stevia altered in a lab" just makes it another artificial sweetener. After all, "sugar altered in a lab" is marketed as Splenda, and that's clearly artificial, i.e. no longer natural sugar.

I think they've got approval already, Kisal, they seem to be selling it now.

I tried it. The taste was fine and all, but it seemed to spark some crazy carb cravings in me. It actually took me a few days to figure out it was the truvia. My hunch is it's whatever they're grouping under "natural flavors" in the ingredients because I don't have a problem with either stevia or erythritol by themselves.

Good to know, thank you....no need to try anything other than stevia, splenda, or sweetzfree!

They still list sugar alcohol carbs as carbs, even though they are not necessarily treated by your body as such. Erythritol has 5 grams of carbs and 20 calories per cup. It has a glycemic index of zero, and passes through your body undigested.

It usually does not cause uncomfortable side effects unless you consume a large amount of it faster than your body can excrete it. You'd have to eat a ton of those little packets to come close to the danger zone!

The ingredients are rebiana, erythritol, and "natural flavors". I am not sure what that means. I was so confused when I looked at my box last night to see 0 calories and 3 gm of carbs per packet.

I have used it. Its very sweet, and you don't need a whole packet. I am not losing as fast as I did last time. So, needless to say, I am cutting this one (and all artificial sweeteners) out for awhile.

I am not sure how it affects blood sugar. I think it definitely depends on the person. I did not experience bad cravings, but like I said, I think it may contribute to slow weight loss and my ketostix not staying consistently pink.
