Default Osteopenia - Bone density

Just had some xrays of my sacral/lumbar region and they mentioned osteopenia. BUMMER.

I'm taking D3 (5-10k), K2 45mcg, Magnesium (lots). I haven't been taking calcium and I don't drink dairy. I'm not crazy about the fact that calcium supplements get deposited in arteries. K2 is supposed to help with that, but do we really know?

Anyway, just looking for advice on improving my bone density.

Food grade diatomaceous earth, gelatin, cal/mag, D3, and K2. I take 100 mcg/day of MK-7 vitamin k.

I had osteopenia. I don't any more.

I had an ultrasound of my organs. No calcium deposits, and they were very healthy and flexible/pliable(?).

Why diatomaceous earth? I use it to stop ants. How much do you use?

Nancy, I'm so sorry you got that diagnosis, but don't despair - low carb to the rescue. Remember this thread?

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=451109

I'm a lot older than you and I managed to shake osteopenia by eating NO GRAINS AT ALL and doing WEIGHT BEARING EXERCISE (in my case, mostly walking).

If you are eating any grains at all, I would urge you to stop. Once you get those phytates out of your system your bones can start absorbing much needed vitamins and minerals for their density, from the good low carb food you eat.

As for weight bearing exercise, I incorporate at least an hour of walking (in 30 minute doses to/from work) into my day and usually more. Much more at weekends. I also use 5lb dumbells for my arms. You don't have to become a gym rat - unless you want to, of course.

A quicker solution would be bioidentical hormones but I recall you weren't too happy with them.

Take heart, you can turn this around.

I haven't eaten grains in 8 years. :\ I do walk every day. The bio-identicals are out due to my clotting gene. As my doctor said, "Don't ever bother asking me for HRT."

I take D3 (5-10k), K2, magnesium and my D3 levels are very good every time I check 50-70ng/ml.

What's your strength training situation?

If it's just that your bone loss is slightly faster than your bone regrowth - Bones grow in response to stimulus. The tug and pull of weight-bearing and strength training helps.

Walking is not very bone-stimulating as exercise goes.

Have you seen that vitamin D has a u-shaped curve? could you be taking too much too long? Here's a study about frailty and women. I wonder what they mean by frailty. !

I've got a back injury, or autoimmune disease that is affecting my back and joints, that rather limits how much and what sort of exercise I can do. :\

I've kind of wondered about the possibility of too much D3 too. Thanks for posting that. But 30ng/ml? That seems awfully low.

aw sorry to hear that.

I think it's low too. Early days in the research though. there's not that much out there on this topic.

Teresa Tapp has a seated workout. don't know if your bones and joints would go for that. Her strength training is all isometric - no weights required but still it's strength training. She was a rehab physical therapist before the fitness biz.

You had a standard x-ray of the spine and they "mentioned osteopenia"?
I understand that a DEXA scan is needed to make a diagonosis. What exactly did they see? I would first ask more and for a written report with the usual Bone Mineral Density test scores. Have you had a baseline before?

1-2 tablespoons once or twice a day.

Here are some testimonials:

Is it food grade? Some kinds have pesticides in them.
