Default Goiter question

My BIL had his goiter removed (didn't show on the outside, but was wrapping around his esophagus) and after the surgery he didn't need the synthroid anymore.

I have been taking Armour Thyroid as a "clinical" dose because my tests all came back normal but I had all the symptoms of low thyroid function. But the doctor has increased the dosage from 1 30m a day to 1 1/2 and then to 2 a day. I still feel no side effects of the extra dosage. I will go for tests again next week.

What I am wondering is--could it be that I have a small goiter that is causing my body not to use the thyroid? Could it be that if this is true that having the thyroid removed wold solve my problems/

I haven't been able to lose weight in many years even though I low carb and lately have been very strict with it. I also have other symptoms like dry skin, hair falling out, brittle nails, always cold, etc.

Thanks

Not sure about goiters but Reverse T3 can cause euthroid patients (patients who have symptoms but not the obvious test results) to have hypo symptoms that do not get better or sometimes get worse if you increase meds.

I would check out realthryoidhelp.com , rt3-thyroid.com and holtorfmed.com to learn about RT3

Goiters are caused when the thyroid enlarges trying to pump out more thyroid hormone. I had one when I was hyperthyroid, my thyroid gland was a little enlarged from that.

I don't really see how removing one would cause one not to need to take thyroid hormone, seems like it would guarantee you would pretty much need to take thyroid hormone, perhaps for life.

Nancy, that is what I thought, too. Maybe what they removed was some type of thyroid tumor. I'll have to ask him again.
