Default Flax Seed vs, FLax Meal

I can't find flax meal in my stores...is flax seed close enough or do I need to crush them?

Thanks. I'm thinking if I sprinkle them in my meals it will help keep me moving. I don't manage psyllium husks or other bulking agents. Hope I handle this one without bloating. Feel free to warn me if flax does this to you.

Thanks in advance!

Ellie

Hi Ellie,

Flaxmeal is just ground flax seed. In fact I believe it's better and fresher of you grind it yourself.
A coffee grinder is best for the grinding. I once tried doing it in my food processor, and all that happened was that the seeds went for a little ride!

You can use them to make a hot cereal. If you search on "flax cereal" you'll find a recipe. Restricting your search foums to the kitchen forums will help.

HTH

Try a natural foods store and look in the refrigerator case. The meal must be refrigerated.

At GNC hey are with the seeds and the oils . they are not in the fridge the are shelf stable until you open it. The meal is also better on your colon. It is cheaper doing it yourself

In Atkins book it states that flax seed has almost no countable carbs. I have not been able to find a count for them. Please pass along if you happen to know of any . Or are they really free.

Loribell - flax meal is virtually entirely FIBER, and EFA oils and so the effective carb count is zero.

Flax seeds have 4.11 g carbs and 3.35 g fiber per Tbsp.

Default Raw vs. Meal?

Hi everyone

I've been reading the threads on flaxseeds, and I just got back from the store and am muching on some raw flaxseeds right now. Pretty yummy, I must say.

My question is, are the benefits of flaxseeds more "effective" if I ground them into meal, or is it the same as just munching on them like peanuts? I've read the recipes on making porridge/cereal, but I'm avoiding any splenda/sweeteners and dairy, so those options won't work for me. I understand that heating flaxseeds/flaxmeal above a certain temp might affect the integrity of the seeds, but other than that, are there any other guidelines for getting the most out of these things?

I'm also taking fish oil capsules, so my main goal with the flaxseeds is to improve my regularity.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Anshim

I love flax seed too, although I grind mine up. Recently I have been eating it uncooked, with a little sf davinci syrup with some nuts in the morning. Drink a bunch of water and you won't be hungry for hours!!! I have been eating flax for years. The benefits are great, including great roughage, lowering of cholesteral. I do not know about heating it if that is bad or not.
What other benefits does it have?
