I am hypothyroid and have been on medication for 5 years and on Atkins for six months. As a matter of fact, my doctor put me on Atkins when I couldn't lose weight no matter what I did. He and I did tweak my medication-but I am telling you this is the best thing I have ever done for myself.

You want to know if it works? Check out my weight loss right under my name!

Lady Di, welcome from one newbie to another.

To answer your question, I'm also "hypo" and have struggled for over 10 years to get the weight off. Low carbing is the only thing I've tried that helps. My body just LOVES carbs but I can feel it slow down even more when I eat the white carbs. They make me lethargic.

Every other diet I've tried (and I've tried them ALL) don't work at all. If anything, I would stay the same weight but usually I gained.

I currently also take synthroid. Been pretty much stable on my meds for a while but I think that changing. Stick with it and check in with me at Richard2 sometime. (Oh, by the way, contrary to my login, I'm a female.)

See ya

ANY color change is a sign of ketosis. Even when really light. You are doing fine!

My first week? I think about 2 pounds. But they didn't show up until the whole week had passed. It is different for everyone-due to past dieting history, age, metabolism.....Give it a full two weeks before you start thinking anything. You are only expected to lose 10% of the weight you need to lose in induction with 5% a month after that. I needed to lose at least 40 pounds, and I did get rid of 4 pounds in induction. I did a three week induction instead of a two week.

I am warning you that my weight loss has not been fast or consistent. I have been doing this very solidly with no real cheats since September 19 or 20 (for six months) and have lost from 160-136. I had lost four or five pounds before I started the really hard way. That still AVERAGES about 4 pounds a month which is really good. Some weeks I lose weight, some weeks I lose inches-but not both at the same time. Now would be a good time to take a couple of measurements so you can track that too. I measure my waist and recently added my thigh. When I am not losing weight-I usually can see a difference in my waist size. It keeps me motivated.

Hi Di!

I'm a hypothyroid, too. I'm hypo due to radioactive iodine given to kill a weird adenoma. One way I monitor myself is to check my pulse. If it gets under 60, or over 80, for a resting heart rate (I'm in average shape) I know it's time to have my levels checked.

If you "feel" hypothyroid, and your TSH levels are OK, make sure the doctor does a free T4 AND a T3 uptake. Synthroid is synthetic T4. If it's not getting converted into T3, you can still feel hypo. It's pretty rare, but it does happen.

A good resource is "Thyroid for Dummies". I hate the "for Dummies" title, since I am NOT dumb, but it is a pretty good book!

With a good partnership with your doctor, (I "broke up with" my endocrinologist because she was a witch and now just see my family doctor) hypothyroidism is pretty darn easy to control.

Default One more thing...

I'm going to second (or third...)the "don't get worked up about the color of your ketostix!" post. If it gets very dark purple, that likely means you are dehydrated. There are the same amount of ketones in your urine, it's just in a smaller volume, so the test will pick up a greater percentage. For an analogy: Think of a teaspoon of salt in a cup vs. a gallon of water.... It's still a teaspoon, but the perception of saltiness will differ. Hope that helps!
