My friend gets ALA injections on a regular basis for her neuropathy -- it's a standard treatment in Europe, but insurance companies consider it an alternative treatment in the US and don't pay for it. Look up Dr. Berkson and ALA. Not sure about how much to take in pill form.

Dr. Bernstein recommends it to help lower BG, but you need r-ALA as it is more absorbable. I tried it and it did seem to help lower my BG by 5pts or so, but I had an allergic reaction (itching), so I stopped taking it. I am prone to eczema and itchy skin even on low carb and without r-ALA, so you may have better luck with it. Evening Primrose Oil was the same experience for me too, worked for BG, but made me itchy.

My eczema is much better since going lc, so I'm not sure I want to risk that. Have to give that some thought.
