General Low Carb Breastfeeding Discussion
Hi there! Breastfeeding uses far more energy than you normally would use even in pregnancy. Add to that the pressures of having a new baby, sleepless nights and ravenous hunger then it takes a lot of effort to change your eating habits as well.
I have been a member for 8 years now and the questions about the safety of lowcarbing when pregnant or breastfeeding seem to be asked just as much now as they ever have been. I notice there is now a discussion thread for pregnancy but think that a dedicated breastfeeding thread is also needed. So here it is! Lets all help each other and give each other support.
Some info about me: Have been low carb on and off for 8 years after being diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia. I lost weight before conceiving my first daughter and managed a semi low carb for most of my pregnancy. Half way through my second pregnancy I felt a switch turn on and I craved all the carbs I could. My cravings have got worse and I have now been diagnosed with insulin in my breastmilk which may explain why my 2.5yr old wants it soooo much! She is also a big sweet tooth and I feel that this is a result of my carb cravings in my pregnancy. (My first daughter is very good and actually prefers a low carb diet herself - coincidence? Perhaps not)
My current diet is mainly protein and fat with a few nuts and veggies. I avoid high carb veggies but do not count carbs. On social occasions I have made a low carb cheesecake and a coconut creme pie (yummy) which everyone loved and at about 5g carb a slice I felt good that I could keep my carbs low. I am on day 10 of my new WOE and am feeling good, more energy and I think my daughter is sleeping better at night which may be because I have lowed my carb intake and therefore my insulin levels are low.
So for all those breastfeeding Mums/Moms when did you start low carbing? Was it before pregnancy or after baby was born? What plan do you use? Do you get questioned/interrogated by family or doctors for low carbing whilst breastfeeding? How do you respond? Perhaps we can all learn from sharing these things.
