Dr. Atkins is giggling in his grave.

At the 20-week point, the effects were quite remarkable: The fewer carbs a person ate, the more calories they burned — and, the logic goes, the easier it’d be to keep their weight off. So people on the low-carb diet burned more than 200 extra calories each day, while people on the moderate-carb diet burned about an extra 100 calories per day, and people on the high-carb diet didn’t burn any extra calories.

Outside of this new study, I haven’t found the evidence for the low-carb diet compelling. But maybe I am too biased by my love of pasta, bread, and cake — and personal experiences failing to restrict my carb intake — to fully embrace low-carb living.
seriously Julia, no evidence? She blows with the wind so good the author fessed up to her own prejudices. She doesn't look like someone with insulin resistance issues, so carb up (at least while you are still young)

Many other articles, Dr. Ludwig's own op-Ed, and more in this thread:

"my love of pasta, bread, and cake," Confessions of a carbohydrate addict. Easy for me to recognize all the signs of substance abuse, as there was a time in the not too distant past when I walked that path. Doesn't have the stigma of illicit drug or alcohol abuse, but the result is the same with deteriorating health leading to an early death. Don't mean to be maudlin, but when a large portion of the world's population suffers with obesity, T2D, CVD, CHD, HBP, and many other symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome with no age discrimination, it can no longer be passed off as a joke.

Fortunately, the results of Ludwig's study will help in taking this subject seriously.

Im with you Rob on the excessive number of people suffering from carb addiction. And like most addicts, it is " I dont have a problem". Too often I have pointed out that eating a whole loaf of freshly made bread is an addiction........ and why I stopped baking bread 15-20 years ago.

My sister is walking proof of carb addiction, especially to grains. She's a mass of arthritis and I'm sure it is caused by grains and dairy. But any time I mention my experiences with those things making me sore and arthritic she says, "Good thing I don't have any of those problems." She scores kind of low on self-awareness. LOL!

Yeah. I was once in a talk with a local woman I knew who was about 150# lighter than me (which is still fat lol). I was telling her how much weight I had lost on low-carb and how it might help her, and she uttered those classic words: "Oh, I could never live without bread." Well, since then she has become diabetic, arthritic, and gotten (and then beat, thankfully) cancer. At this rate she is more likely to live without bread than live with it, it seems.
