Thumbs up Jimmy's Super Skins - yet another review

At the local DeMoula's grocery, we found a new brand, which I suspect they may have just been experimenting with and not found successful. The list price printed on the bag was $1.49 for 4 oz. (reasonable) and they had been marked down twice, once to .99, and a second time to 2/$1.00.

We found two flavors, Plain and "Red Hot Barbecue" Mary-Anne tossed the empty plain flavor bag before I got the info off it, but the following is the info off the BBQ flavor...

Jimmy's Super Skins (in a print style reminiscent of a comic book...)

Mfg for Jimmy's Bakon-Teez Brands, Hollywood FL 33019

US Dept of Ag. inspected EST.841

Ingredients: (BBQ flavor) Pork Skins, Dextrose, Salt, Flavorings, and Vegetable Oil

Nutritional Info:
Serving Size: 1/2 Oz, 14g, or "about 2 large pieces"
Servings per container: 8

Per Serving:
Calories: 80 (from fat 40)
Total fat 4g
Saturated Fat 1.5g
Cholesterol 20mg
Sodium 115 mg
Total Carbs 1g
Dietary Fiber 0g
Sugars 0g
Protein 8g (not a significant source of protein)
No significant vitamins / minerals claimed.

The label numbers seem to add up reasonably well, and aside from the dextrose which appears to have been used in trace amounts, none of the ingredients seem problematic. The sodium level is the lowest of any of the brands we've tried yet.

Taste for the plain was good to excellent, fairly neutral, made a good 'dip carrier / cracker substitute. The BBQ flavor has a mild hot flavor, but not much other than that. Despite the low sodium numbers, there was still an adequately good level of salt flavor, not excessive, but nice. I would say not quite as good as Goya, but in the upper end of the flavor spectrum.

The average piece size is much larger than most of the other brands, which would account for the lower count in the serving size numbers. Shape was erratic, some were large squarish shapes, others were long narrow strips, but all were relatively big.

Texture was mixed - most seemed pieces 'fluffier' or puffed up more than the other brands, but there were also alot of hard cruncy bits, even in the midst of pieces that looked fluffy... The numbers of hard bits was comparable to Goya though, so they weren't excessive.

Overall, a good brand, reccomended.

I'm currently PMSing like all get out. Oneof the ways I handle the "just need a little something sweet..." Sugar Free Davinci's Caramel syrup spritzed over pork rinds. Mix well and don't go for soggy....they are like Cracker Jacks--and the caramel covers the "feet" smell. {<:
