Default Water consumption and breastfeeding?

Anyone know if the recommended amount of water (8-10 glasses/day) is still appropriate amount when breastfeeding?

Yesterday I felt like I couldn't drink enough and ended up having 13 glasses! Not that I'm opposed to water, and I certainly didn't FEEL like I was drinking too much, but I wasn't sure if I might be accidently 'watering down' my milk...

Drink to thirst and don't worry about it. You'd have to be dying of dehyration before it will affect your milk. You'll feel the effects long before then if you are not drinking enough. And you won't water down your milk either. You'll just spend a lot of time peeing.

Actually, I thought that was one of the nicer things about BF, that I wasn't constantly rushing to the loo.

Thanks for the advice! And trust me, I am enjoying not needing to use the bathroom every 30-45 minutes. Although sometimes I do sneak in there for a minute or two of sanity!

staying hydrated helps you produce milk. Remember, your body is now giving away several ounces of liquid daily, so it will be normal to be thirsty. Also, while you're pregnant, your body stores water, not just as amniotic fluid, but it retains a bit for back up, so you'll be sweating a lot, and shedding some of that water weight just because in the first 6 months. Drinking a lot helps reduce water retention. All around, it's just a good idea to drink as much as you body tells you to, and maybe more! peeing regularly helps maintain a healthy bladder!

Both my husband and I had forgotten about the sweating/ breastfedibg combo. The first night it happened he woke me up w/a thermometer concerned that I was fever-ish!

Omg I drank so much the first few months of BF'ing, I used to keep a 2L bottle of water on my nightstand--full at bedtime, empty by morning, lol.

One old rule of thumb that I really like is to drink a glass of liquid at every nursing.
