This was my worst showing in terms of average steps in a long time. At least I'm still moving everyday. I can't be too upset about that.

I've been laying off the jogging for the past few weeks. I've been working long hours and fighting off a minor bug of some kind, but I did this mainly to let my knee injury fully recover. I also saw this as an aid to getting my eating (portion size) under control. When I lost all my weight several years ago I was not jogging as part of my routine. In fact, whenever I've been training hard for a 10K race I always manage to be gaining weight. This past year I put on several pounds. I'm working on my eating to reverse this trend.

I have a 10K coming up at the end of the month. The plan is to ease back into jogging over the next few weeks and run my 2020 Richmond 10K at a comfortably slow pace. Kelsey shall wear the crown this year.

Well, not so fast on the Kelsey wearing the crown this year business. They've postponed the March 28th Richmond 10K as a result of the virus pandemic. It will now be run in late September 2020. That gives me 6 months to shed some weight, fully heal my knee and get back into 10K form with my jogging. It was going to be a cake walk for Kel this year. She has really taken up jogging as her way to stay fit while I've been slacking off. Looks like I now have a chance to make it a real race again. Motivation is where you find it. I need to take advantage of this.

Today would have been my 5th annual Richmond Monument Avenue 10K. The pandemic nixed that. It has been postponed until September 26th. There is no doubt that I would have run a slow race today. Kelsey would have had her first victory against her dear old dad.

I'm a few pounds up on the scale from last year's race (when I ran my fastest time), but I don't think that it would have been much of a factor. I simply did not train for this race like I did last year. The minor, yet nagging knee injury I suffered in a tough hike last November knocked me off of my game. I cut way back on the jogging to let it heal. The knee is good to go now; I'm just not in jogging shape. I'm taking a break from jogging and ramping up on my walking for now. At some point I need to get back to training for the upcoming 10K. I want to lose some of my excess weight first, though.

Kel has made jogging her thing now. She has kept it up through the winter months running on campus outdoors. Even if I do adequate training for September's race I will be hard pressed to beat her. She will have won fair and square an I will have no excuses. That's how it should be.

I'm still plugging away with my daily exercise. I've dropped the jogging for a while. I'm doing more walking on nearby trails to get more hills into my routine. March and April totals were much better than February.

No race... no Kentucky Derby until Sept 5 either. It's an odd year...
Good for you, though to let the knee heal first, and you'll have the summer to train. Rooting for ya. I'm doing what I can, want to be in decent shape when it finally is safe to have the knee surgery.

May was a bit more lax that I would have liked. A busy life, the Y being closed and weather had a lot to do with it. Still, I got my 10K steps in everyday. I've been doing more hiking trails instead of street walking to get in more hilly climbs. I'd say that I'm still plenty active. I just could have done more.

The knee injured last November is totally healed. I have that postponed 10K coming up in September. I have not jogged in months. It's time to slowly work jogging back into my routine. A few jogs in June would be prudent.

I did get the jogging going again in June. I started with a few 1 mile jogs. It didn't take long to get back in the swing of it. I finished up the month with 2 mile jogs on back-to-back days -- the last one being outdoors in 85 degree humid weather. It's summer, so I may as well get used to working out in the heat. 20 miles for the month of June vs. zero the past few months... I'm happy with that.

Kelsey is home and the Y is open. She loves to work out and has pushed be back into a weight lifting routine. I love walking. I don't mind the jogging. But weight lifting is one of those things that I always say that I need to do, but never seem to do with any consistency. I've done it some when Kel was home from college only to let it slide when she returned. She's graduated and may be home for some time. That means good things for my consistency in the weight room. Kel won't let me be a slacker anymore.
